Oracle begins new layoff wave as restructuring cost climbs to $2.8 billion

Oracle has started another round of layoffs, delivering 6 a.m. termination emails after a 13% workforce cut, as the estimated cost of its fiscal 2026 restructuring plan rises to roughly $2.8 billion.

Oracle begins new layoff wave as restructuring cost climbs to $2.8 billion

A new round follows a 21,000-person reduction

Oracle has begun another wave of layoffs, with employees receiving termination emails early on Monday morning as the company pushes ahead with a sweeping reorganisation, according to Tech Times. The cuts follow a fiscal 2026 in which Oracle's workforce fell by roughly 21,000 people, or about 13%, leaving the company with approximately 141,000 employees worldwide before the latest round began.

The number of people affected by the new cuts has not been disclosed. The clearest measure of scale is financial: in a regulatory filing, Oracle added about $700 million to its estimate for the fiscal 2026 restructuring plan, lifting the total to roughly $2.8 billion. The increase covers additional severance, contract terminations and other restructuring costs.

A choreographed early-morning timeline

Staff accounts posted to Reddit, relayed by Tech Times and not independently verified, describe a tightly coordinated sequence. One user wrote that federated logins were disabled at 4 a.m. Eastern Time, meaning anyone who still had access was safe, with Slack access then removed in a rolling wave between 5 and 5:30 a.m. and termination emails arriving at 6 a.m. sharp.

A Texas-based employee said he discovered the cut when his badge failed at the site gate. Locked out of Slack and his accounts, he joined the network from outside the building just to retrieve his own termination email and forward it to a personal address before losing access permanently. He said he had started the role on 2 February and had received a "Meets Expectations" performance rating. Another employee described waking at 6:30 a.m. to find the news, along with the loss of a stock grant tied to a promotion that was due the following month. A QA engineer with 24 years at the company described receiving little more than an impersonal email.

What the notification said

The termination message told recipients that Oracle had decided to eliminate their role as part of a wider organisational change, and that the day of the email was their last working day. It thanked staff for their contributions, directed them to a DocuSign envelope containing severance terms, and asked them to submit a personal email address immediately in order to receive follow-up information.

The message also warned that access to computers, email, voicemail and files would be deactivated shortly, and reminded employees they were prohibited from downloading, copying or retaining Oracle confidential information. Severance packages were offered, though the specific terms varied by role and region, Tech Times reports.

How deep the cuts run

Citing an internal document reviewed by Business Insider, Tech Times reports that some teams experienced double-digit percentage reductions. One Reddit account described half of a team inside Oracle's CSS organisation being cut, with directors and managers swept up alongside frontline staff in North American CSM teams.

Earlier reports estimated that Oracle's broader 2026 restructuring could eventually affect between 20,000 and 30,000 positions, but that figure was never a confirmed tally for this round.

Spending on AI while cutting headcount

Oracle's stated rationale is efficiency, as the company pours billions into AI and cloud infrastructure while trying to manage the cost of that expansion. Oracle has not said whether AI systems are absorbing the work of eliminated roles, and it has not publicly commented on the latest round.

The pattern extends beyond one company. Business Standard reported that Oracle, Amazon, Dell, Uber and PayPal are among the major technology employers driving a global wave of job cuts in 2026, restructuring their workforces even as they increase investment in AI and other technologies.

Why it matters

Oracle is one of the largest builders of AI and cloud infrastructure, and cutting more than 13% of its workforce while raising restructuring charges to $2.8 billion shows where the money is flowing: capital-intensive data centres over headcount. The mechanics of this round — 4 a.m. credential cutoffs, badge lockouts, 6 a.m. emails with same-day termination — illustrate how clinical mass reductions have become at major tech employers, and staff accounts suggest that long tenure and solid performance ratings offered little protection. For engineers across the industry, Oracle's cuts are another data point in a year where restructuring and AI spending are moving together at several of the biggest names in tech.
