Plaud One earbuds add an eSIM case for reaching AI agents without a phone

Plaud, which says more than 2.5 million people use its hardware or software, has moved its AI note-taking business into a new shape: earbuds. According to TechCrunch, the newly announced Plaud One earbuds record and transcribe calls and in-person conversations, while their charging case doubles as a room recorder and carries its own cellular connection via an eSIM — the feature the company hopes will set it apart.

What the earbuds do

TechCrunch describes the Plaud One as visually close to Apple's AirPods, with 12mm drivers and active noise cancellation. The earbuds themselves record phone calls, while the case can capture in-person conversations from up to five meters away. On a single charge, the earbuds are rated for six hours of meeting recording or three hours of call recording, and the earbud-plus-case combination is good for up to 25 hours of recorded conversation.

Once a conversation is transcribed, Plaud's AI agent can connect to services such as Gmail, Google Calendar, Notion and Slack to draft follow-up emails or produce documents and presentations based on what was discussed. As TechCrunch points out, the software side of this pitch is not new: tools like Granola, Fathom and Read AI already automate similar workflows from transcripts, and hardware rivals Viaim and Anker have note-taking earbuds on the market already.

The eSIM is the actual bet

The differentiator is the case's eSIM support. Plaud says this lets users instruct its AI agents remotely, with no phone or computer needed as an intermediary. Plaud CEO Nathan Xu argued in a briefing that AI needs a wearable interface that is always available — something people actually want to wear, that looks acceptable in public and is built to protect privacy — and he sees earbuds as the best fit for that role.

Rather than framing the Plaud One as an AirPods rival, Xu positions it as the company's meeting-recording technology adapted to a popular wearable format. TechCrunch is skeptical on that point, noting that ordinary wireless earbuds paired with any note-taking app can cover much of the same ground.

Pricing, availability and what comes next

The Plaud One is up for pre-order at $249 and is scheduled to ship in the fourth quarter of 2026. Buyers get 300 minutes of free transcription per month; beyond that, paid plans start at $8.33 per month when billed annually. A software update in the coming months is expected to add broader agentic capabilities with a credit-based system for individual tasks, and Plaud One buyers will receive $200 in credits to spend on them.

The launch itself is deliberately small. TechCrunch reports that quantities will be limited while the startup tests demand for AI-focused earbuds before committing to the form factor. The company claimed $100 million in annual run-rate revenue in June, but the field is crowded: YC-backed Pocket has reportedly hit the same milestone, and Anker, Comu, Viaim and software startup Genspark are all building in the space, with new note-taking hardware arriving weekly.

Why it matters

The eSIM-equipped case is the most interesting detail here, because it points beyond note-taking. Plaud is effectively testing a standalone, always-connected endpoint for AI agents — a device that can listen, transcribe and then act across your work tools without a phone in the loop. If agent-driven workflows become routine, the hardware that can invoke them from anywhere becomes valuable platform territory. The limited run is a low-risk way to learn whether people want that capability in their earbuds, or whether the smartphone remains the hub that all AI hardware orbits.
