The tutorial includes a parts list and detailed assembly instructions, The Verge reports, and is built around the 16GB version of the Raspberry Pi 5. Rather than chasing the elaborate aesthetics that make many community builds stand out, the official design sticks to a plain black Pelican-style case.

That restraint leaves room for personalization, which is arguably the whole point of the format. As The Verge notes, creators are proving that a cyberdeck can be built out of just about anything. The outlet highlights Annike Tan, whose cyberdecks have attracted millions of views on TikTok, as an example of how far the concept can be pushed: she continues to upgrade her "mermaid" purse cyberdeck with new design details and has even added a USB hub.

A backdrop of price increases

The guide arrives during a year in which Raspberry Pi has raised its prices multiple times, which The Verge attributes to rising costs for RAM and other components. The 16GB Raspberry Pi 5 at the center of the cyberdeck guide received a $100 price hike in April — nearly as much as the board's original $120 price.

The Verge suggests that backing a growing market of active and would-be hobbyists could be one way for the company to sustain demand as its hardware becomes more expensive.
