Revolut outage blocks payments and account access for thousands of users

Revolut says a service disruption hit multiple services on Tuesday morning, leaving thousands of users unable to make payments or access funds, as Google Cloud reported errors at its UK cloud region.

Revolut outage blocks payments and account access for thousands of users

What happened

Revolut, the UK-based digital bank with more than 80 million customers worldwide according to figures on its own website, suffered a broad service disruption on Tuesday morning, 20 October. Thousands of users reported they could not make some payments or access funds through the app.

According to the BBC, outage monitor Downdetector logged more than 1,500 user reports about Revolut problems shortly after 08:00 BST.

A Revolut spokesperson confirmed "a service disruption affecting multiple services" and stressed that all customers' money and data were safe. The company said it had been working on a fix since the issue was identified that morning, and apologised for the inconvenience.

What was affected

Revolut's status page listed several core functions as partially unavailable, the BBC reported, including card payments, transfers, ATM withdrawals and customer support.

On social media, users criticised the bank, saying they could not reach their funds, complete payments or get through to support — a combination that left affected customers with few options, because the channels for getting help were down too. Revolut did not clarify whether users outside the UK were affected, and declined to say on the record what had caused the problems.

Signs of a wider problem

Revolut was not the only financial firm struggling that morning. The BBC reported that Lloyds Bank and Bank of Scotland, both owned by Lloyds Banking Group, were also experiencing problems with certain online services. A Lloyds spokesperson told the broadcaster its app was "functioning normally", but acknowledged "some are having issues with certain online services this morning" and said the bank was "aware of similar issues affecting other organisations".

At the same time, a Google Cloud service health dashboard showed "elevated errors and intermittent network failures" affecting some services at the provider's UK cloud region, europe-west2. The near-simultaneous incidents point to a possible failure in shared cloud infrastructure rather than unrelated problems at each institution, although no direct connection has been confirmed.

Why it matters

The outage underlines how concentrated the plumbing behind modern banking has become. Revolut is one of the most prominent of the "neobanks" built to rival traditional lenders with a digital-first model, and many customers rely on it as their main account. When card payments, transfers and ATM access fail at the same time — and customer support fails with them — those customers are effectively cut off from their money, with the usual support channels unavailable as well.

It also illustrates the systemic risk of shared cloud infrastructure. If disruption at a single cloud region can degrade several banks' services at once, an outage at a major provider becomes an outage across the financial sector rather than one company's problem. Incidents like this are likely to sharpen questions about how dependent digital financial services have become on a small number of cloud platforms.
