Shopify launches Canvas, an AI chat-based store builder powered by Sidekick

Shopify's new Canvas tool lets merchants build and edit their stores by chatting with the Sidekick AI agent, which applies changes to the store's real code and renders them live.

What Canvas does

Shopify has launched Canvas, a site-building tool that lets merchants assemble and edit an online store by conversing with an AI agent instead of rearranging sections in a theme editor. According to TechCrunch, which reported the debut, merchants describe what they want to Shopify's assistant, Sidekick, and the AI makes the changes while Canvas shows the results as they happen.

Shopify already offered a fairly capable no-code builder before this: merchants could modify a chosen theme by moving modular sections and blocks around. But anything beyond surface-level adjustments required editing code directly or hiring a developer. Canvas targets exactly that gap, letting users watch the whole store come together, zoom out for the overall look or zoom in on specific details.

How it works

The key technical detail, per Shopify, is that Canvas is not showing a static preview. The tool renders the actual code running behind the merchant's store, which means users can test a page's full interactivity and animations and see how it appears at different screen sizes. Sidekick also takes screenshots of the work in progress, so the agent is looking at the same thing the merchant sees as the site updates.

Hands-on editing has not been removed. Merchants can still click on individual elements to make changes directly if they prefer, though Shopify expects most will simply tell Sidekick what they want in the chat.

Sidekick itself predates Canvas. It has already been used to write code, build apps, customize themes and make other edits across Shopify, but those abilities had not been pulled into a complete site-building product before. With Canvas, users can see the entire store at once and pan and zoom around while updates are applied to the site's real files.

To make that possible, Shopify gave Sidekick the ability to work directly with a theme's files and simplified the theme architecture so that a store's structure, logic and design are easier for the agent to understand and modify.

A crowded field

Canvas lands in the middle of a broader shift toward building websites without writing code by hand. As TechCrunch notes, it joins AI-powered site builders from Wix, Squarespace, Webflow and Framer, along with "vibe-coding" platforms such as Lovable and Replit. Shopify's offering stands apart by being embedded in a commerce platform, where the storefront is tied into a wider stack of merchant tooling rather than existing as a standalone website.

Why it matters

Shopify is betting that conversation becomes the default way merchants create and maintain their storefronts, not just a support feature on the side. If Canvas works as intended, it lowers the barrier to selling online for people who lack the budget for developers and designers or the time to learn to code, which widens Shopify's potential customer base at the low end of the market.

It also signals where Shopify's platform is heading: the simplified theme architecture and Sidekick's direct file access suggest future tooling will be designed to be machine-editable first, with human editing layered on top. TechCrunch reports the product is still in its early days with room to expand and improve, so the immediate impact will depend on how reliably Sidekick handles real merchant requests. But the direction is clear, and it puts competitive pressure on rival site builders to match a chat-first workflow.
