Slackforce Surfaces builds apps where the chat already is

According to The Verge, Slack is launching Slackforce Surfaces, a feature that lets users generate interactive reports, polls, dashboards, presentations and even microsites directly inside a chat. The workflow is conversational: you describe what you need to Slackbot, and the AI assembles it by drawing on relevant conversations and connected apps such as Google Drive and Salesforce.

Once Slackbot produces a Surface, it behaves like a shared artifact rather than a one-off reply. The Verge reports that surfaces can be sent to colleagues and pinned to channels, where teammates can view them, interact with them and leave comments.

What Slack has demonstrated

In one example Slack shared, a user asked Slackbot for an arcade-themed visualization of AI token usage. The assistant responded with an interactive dashboard breaking down token consumption across divisions such as sales, design and engineering.

Other suggested uses include a live dashboard for a customer support queue that coworkers can monitor together, or a weather-themed financial forecast that pulls figures from connected apps.

Ryan Gavin, Slack's chief marketing officer, told The Verge in an email that the point is to avoid exporting data elsewhere: users can have Slackbot build the dashboard, deck or report where the conversation already lives, letting the whole team act on it together.

Slack also says the feature will only draw on information its AI tools have already been given permission to access, which addresses one obvious concern about an assistant that reaches into connected services.

The latest step in Slackbot's reinvention

The release builds on a busy stretch for Slack's assistant. As The Verge notes, Slack overhauled Slackbot in recent months to make it function more like an AI assistant, giving it the ability to summarize information across channels, sort through messages and find times to schedule meetings. A month before this launch, the company also added collaborative vibe coding channels, where teams build software together with AI inside Slack.

Availability and timing

Slackforce Surfaces is available to all customers, including those on the free tier, as long as Slackbot is enabled in their workspace, The Verge reports. One caveat on timing: the feature will work with live data starting in October, so surfaces built before then will be limited in that respect.

Why it matters

Slack is positioning itself as the place where work products get made, not merely discussed. If a service-queue dashboard or a division-level report can be generated, shared and iterated on in the same window as the conversation around it, teams have one less reason to context-switch into a separate analytics tool or site builder.

The free-tier availability matters too: it puts AI-generated internal tooling in front of a very wide audience, including small teams that would never license a dedicated business intelligence platform. And the permission model Slack describes, where Surfaces only touch data its AI tools already have rights to, will be the detail enterprise buyers watch most closely, since an assistant that assembles cross-app dashboards is only as trustworthy as its access controls.
