Snapchat launches Plans, an event-planning suite aimed at Partiful
Snapchat's new Plans feature adds event creation, RSVPs, guest lists and reminders inside the app, taking aim at Partiful and Apple's Invites.

What Snapchat announced
Snapchat has launched Plans, a set of features for organizing real-world get-togethers without leaving the app. According to TechCrunch, the announcement on Thursday covers creating, sharing and managing events, with the company pointing to birthday celebrations, sporting events, study sessions and weekend hangouts as the kinds of occasions it expects users to run through the feature.
The Verge frames the launch as Snap giving structure to something that already happens on the platform: friends routinely arrange meetups in group chats, and Plans turns those loose conversations into tracked events rather than messages that scroll away.
How a Plan works
According to TechCrunch, a user creates a Plan by giving it a title, choosing a date and time, and inviting up to 200 friends. Each invitation is delivered in a one-on-one chat with the invited friend, and guests reply with "Going," "Maybe" or "Can't Go."
Hosts can see who has committed, invite additional friends and update event details after the fact. Guests can view the full guest list, change their RSVP whenever they like, and receive a reminder an hour before the event begins. A new "My Plans" section on user profiles collects current, upcoming and past events in one view, and opening a friend's profile shows any plans shared with that person.
The Verge adds one detail TechCrunch leaves out: invitations carry dynamic Bitmoji that change as friends respond.
Snap says Plans are private and invite-only. In a blog post quoted by TechCrunch, the company pitched the feature as an antidote to "buried messages, lost details, or forgetting to create an invitation."
A crowded invitation market
TechCrunch reports that Snapchat is aiming squarely at Partiful, an event-planning and digital-invitation platform that has caught on with younger users who favor dedicated apps over group chats for organizing get-togethers. Nor is Snapchat the only incumbent moving into this space: Apple released its own invitation app, Invites, last year for building custom invitations for any occasion.
Why it matters
The launch matters on two levels. Strategically, The Verge notes that Snap is struggling to retain users in key markets, and that sticky utilities like Plans, which give hosts and guests a recurring reason to open the app, could prove important to the company's long-term prospects while it is distracted by its eyewear efforts.
Competitively, it is another case of a large platform absorbing the core function of a standalone tool. Partiful's pitch is that it does one thing well, away from the noise of a social feed; Snapchat's counter is that the friend graph, the chat history and now the invitation all live in one place. TechCrunch also situates the feature within a broader shift, with Gen Z pushing for more in-person connection, demand that both dedicated apps and established social platforms are now racing to serve.
