Sony says the Xperia 10 VI will not receive the Android 17 update promised at launch, blaming storage configuration limits, though security patches will continue until June 2028.

Sony drops promised Android 17 update for Xperia 10 VI, cites storage limits

Sony will not deliver the Android 17 update it once promised for the Xperia 10 VI, the company has confirmed in a support notice, ending the phone's run of major OS upgrades one release short of its original commitment.

What Sony said

According to The Verge, the notice appeared on Sony's UK support site and attributes the reversal to hardware constraints. Sony says a "detailed technical assessment" found "limitations related to the device's storage configuration," which mean the Xperia 10 VI "does not support an Android 17 upgrade experience that we consider adequate." On that basis, the company says it "decided not to make this upgrade available" and apologized, acknowledging that the outcome falls short of what was originally announced.

The promise that was broken

The Xperia 10 VI is a midrange handset announced over two years ago with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 chipset and Android 14 preinstalled, The Verge reports. At launch, Sony committed to three major OS updates for the device, a pledge that would have carried it through to this year's Android 17 release. Android 17 represented the final instalment of that promise, and it is now off the table.

What owners still get

The phone is not being abandoned entirely. Sony says it will continue to provide four years of security updates for the Xperia 10 VI, coverage the company expects to extend until June 2028. Owners will therefore keep receiving security patches even as the flow of new Android versions stops.

Sony says other models are unaffected

Sony also states that the storage issue is specific to the Xperia 10 VI's technical specifications and does not affect the OS update commitments made for other Xperia models. The Verge's Andrew Liszewski questions that assurance, noting that because the technical requirements of future Android versions are not yet known, the announcement makes Sony's promises harder to take at face value.

Why it matters

Update pledges have become a core part of how phones are sold, particularly in the midrange segment where long-term software support is one of the clearest differentiators on the spec sheet. Buyers of the Xperia 10 VI were told they would receive three major Android versions and made purchase decisions with that expectation in mind.

Sony's reversal shows those commitments are not guarantees. The stated reason, a storage configuration that supposedly cannot deliver an adequate Android 17 experience, is vague, and owners have no practical way to verify it independently. They also have no remedy: the phone will simply stay on its current Android version while the rest of the ecosystem moves forward.

The episode is likely to color how shoppers weigh Sony's future update promises. Even with security patches guaranteed until June 2028, the Xperia 10 VI will miss out on whatever features and platform changes arrive with Android 17 and subsequent releases. For a company competing in a market where rivals tout ever-longer support windows, breaking a written commitment partway through a device's life carries a reputational cost that outlasts any single model.
