Spotify ships first fully native in-car app on Android Automotive, starting with Audi

Spotify has launched its first fully native in-car application, built directly on Google's Android Automotive operating system and debuting in a selection of Audi vehicles. According to The Verge, the app was announced on Wednesday and runs on the car's own infotainment hardware, meaning no phone tethering, Bluetooth pairing or aux cable is needed to stream.

The first wave of compatible cars includes the electric Audi A6 e-tron and Q6 e-tron, together with the combustion-engined A5, Q5 and A6. Jonathan Tarlton, Spotify's automotive business development lead, told The Verge that the app took a little over a year to build and is meant to deliver an experience the company fully controls.

The commercial stakes are significant: figures cited by The Verge indicate that 34 percent of Spotify's monthly active users and 77 percent of its Premium subscribers listen in the car, making the vehicle one of the most important screens the streaming service competes for.

From headless to headful

Spotify was already present on Android Automotive, but only indirectly. Its earlier integration was a headless implementation: Spotify supplied the catalog, playlists and backend data, while templates provided by Google determined how the interface appeared on screen. The new Audi app is headful, letting Spotify design and render its own interface from scratch on the vehicle's displays.

"We're drawing all the pixels," Tarlton said in an interview with The Verge. "We own the user experience."

What the car gains over a mirrored phone

Because the app lives on the vehicle itself, it is available immediately, with no waiting for a phone to connect or a projection interface to load, which Tarlton framed as an answer to sluggish morning startups.

The Verge also lists capabilities that phone projection cannot replicate. Passengers can scan a QR code on the car's screen to join a shared Spotify Jam queue from their own devices. On vehicles with a dedicated front-passenger display, that passenger can browse, follow lyrics and watch video without disturbing the driver. And while the car is parked or charging, video podcasts and animated lyrics move to the central display so everyone in the cabin can watch.

Still committed to CarPlay

Tarlton stressed that Spotify remains committed to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and wants to be accessible regardless of which phone ecosystem a listener uses. Even so, the native app is positioned to compete directly with phone projection, which remains the default way most drivers access media in their cars. The Verge reads the launch as the clearest indication yet that Spotify is prepared to move beyond the mirroring platforms that currently dominate in-car listening.

One package, many carmakers

Rather than building bespoke software for each manufacturer, Spotify intends to concentrate the rollout on cars running Android-based operating systems. A single standard Android Automotive package can then be distributed through multiple storefronts, from the Google Play Store to proprietary shops such as the Audi Application Store. Tarlton said avoiding fragmentation was the top priority, arguing that the car should be an open environment where apps have a fair shot.

Why it matters

This is the first serious attempt by a major streaming service to bypass phone projection and run as a first-class app on vehicle hardware, in a setting where a large majority of its paying customers already listen. If drivers adopt it, influence over the in-car experience shifts away from Apple's and Google's projection layers toward the automaker's own operating system and Spotify itself. The launch also establishes a pattern other developers could follow on Android Automotive, and features such as QR-based Jam sessions and passenger-screen video demonstrate the kind of functionality that could actually pull listeners away from CarPlay.
