Starcloud founders pitch an 80,000-year, $15M probe to Alpha Centauri
The orbital data center startup's founders have formed a non-profit, Fermi Explorer, to send a 1 kg probe on an 80,000-year trip to Alpha Centauri using existing technology, targeting a 2029 launch.

Starcloud founders unveil Fermi Explorer
The founders of Starcloud, the startup that wants to operate fleets of GPUs in orbit, are pitching something even more ambitious than orbital data centers: a tiny spacecraft bound for Alpha Centauri on an 80,000-year journey. According to TechCrunch, the mission is run by a newly formed non-profit called Fermi Explorer, which has emerged publicly to ask for partners, donations and advice. The project is budgeted at roughly $15 million and aims to launch in 2029.
If it gets off the ground, the probe would become the first human-made object explicitly aimed at another star, and only the sixth to leave the solar system. The initial team consists of Starcloud founders Philip Johnston, Adi Oltean and Ezra Feilden, along with program manager Garret Jameson.
Proven parts and extreme patience
The vehicle itself is deliberately modest: a 10 cm square payload weighing 1 kilogram. The plan calls for launching it on a rocket rideshare, then using efficient but low-power electric propulsion to slingshot through a series of orbits that eventually send it out of the solar system toward Alpha Centauri. The spacecraft would stay active for about 12 years before entering a long, unpowered coast.
The team says the mission is motivated by human exploration, the pursuit of a historic first, and a desire to test the limits of the Fermi paradox, the question of why we have yet to detect other intelligent life in the universe, which also gives the mission its name. The non-profit is looking for vendors to build the craft, funding to pay them, and scientific and artistic payloads to carry aboard, echoing the sensors and Golden Record carried by NASA's Voyager probes.
A different bet than Starshot
Interstellar proposals usually fail on distance. As TechCrunch notes, Voyager, launched in 1977, is now about 26 billion km from Earth, while Alpha Centauri, our nearest stellar neighbor, lies roughly 41 trillion km away. The last major Silicon Valley effort, Breakthrough Starshot, founded in 2016 by Yuri Milner and backed by Mark Zuckerberg, planned a multi-billion-dollar laser-based propulsion system to reach Alpha Centauri in 20 to 30 years. According to TechCrunch, that effort collapsed in 2025.
Fermi Explorer inverts the logic. Instead of pushing propulsion technology forward to shorten the trip, it uses hardware that already exists and accepts a travel time far beyond any human lifetime. Johnston told TechCrunch he was initially excited and then let down by Starshot, and that his team is focused on launching within three years. Other proposals, he argued, chase completion within a human lifetime, which forces billion-dollar propulsion research programs; his team instead "very deliberately picked 80,000 years as the minimum viable mission."
Survival over such timescales is the obvious question. Johnston's answer, as reported by TechCrunch, is that materials hold up: if a dinosaur bone can last 200 million years, a metal box can weather the expected radiation environment for 50,000. The team has no plans to power the spacecraft back up at the end of its journey. The hope is that some future human civilization will intercept it.
Why it matters
The pitch is a telling offshoot of the space-compute gold rush. Starcloud's core business, orbital GPU data centers, already rests on the argument that launch costs have fallen far enough to put serious hardware in space, and Fermi Explorer extends that same proven-tech, cheap-rideshare logic to its extreme. It also shows how the collapse of Breakthrough Starshot left room for a different model: not a decade-defining propulsion breakthrough, but a startup-style minimum viable mission with a $15 million budget. Whether or not the 2029 launch happens, it marks how far cheap access to orbit has shifted what a four-person team can credibly propose.
