Tesla launches Cybercab robotaxi at closed-door Austin event
Tesla officially launched its two-seat, camera-only Cybercab at a private Austin event with 45 vehicles registered in Texas, but no livestream, no sale date, and big questions left open.

Tesla has officially launched the Cybercab, its purpose-built two-seat robotaxi, at a private event in Austin, Texas. According to The Verge, the occasion — arguably the biggest autonomous-vehicle milestone in the company's history — was handled with unusual restraint: no public livestream, a guest list weighted toward Tesla-friendly creators, and non-disclosure agreements for attendees.
A quiet debut
The Verge reports that because Tesla did not broadcast the launch, supporters on X resorted to streaming a webpage that tracks the number of Tesla robotaxis operating in Texas. One attendee, Chuck Cook, told the outlet he had signed an NDA and accepted an embargo that prevented him from posting content until the event had concluded. The approach drew criticism even from loyal corners of the community, with the site Not a Tesla App accusing the company of mishandling the rollout.
The commercial footprint at launch is modest. Tesla has 45 Cybercabs registered with the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles, though The Verge notes it is unclear how many will enter paid service immediately; several were made available to influencers in Austin for content creation. Tesla also put up a website for its Robotaxi service laying out rider rules — children under 13 are barred for now — alongside videos covering the interior, crash tests, and accessibility.
Camera-only, control-free
First shown in 2024, the Cybercab is a two-seat vehicle with gullwing-style doors that navigates using eight cameras. It has no steering wheel, pedals or mirrors, and — in contrast to rivals such as Waymo — carries no lidar or radar.
Filings with the Environmental Protection Agency, cited by The Verge, describe it as the lightest and most range-efficient car Tesla has built: a single front-mounted 219-horsepower permanent-magnet motor driving the front wheels, a compact 48kWh battery pack running at 326 volts, and a curb weight of 3,113 pounds — roughly 700 pounds lighter than the lightest Model 3, and comparable to a gas-powered compact despite carrying a lithium-ion battery.
The scale gap
According to the tracking site Robotaxi Tracker, Tesla now runs 256 unsupervised autonomous vehicles across six cities. Waymo, by comparison, operates roughly 4,000 vehicles in 14 cities. Tesla's existing robotaxi service, which has run for the past year in Texas and Florida, relies on modified Model Y cars — some supervised by human safety drivers, some not.
Old promises, open questions
The launch left key questions unanswered. Two years ago, Musk suggested the Cybercab would be sold to buyers for perhaps $30,000; Tesla has still not said when it will go on sale, though a new online form invites expressions of interest in buying fleets or building "mobility hubs and infrastructure."
The gap between prediction and reality is a recurring theme in The Verge's reporting: Musk once claimed half the US population would have access to Tesla robotaxis by the end of 2025, yet the service today covers only six cities in Texas and Florida. A human-driven ridehail service exists in the San Francisco Bay Area, but Tesla has not applied for a driverless testing permit in California. The company also faces lawsuits from customers and regulators over its self-driving claims, its $99-per-month Full Self-Driving option remains a Level 2 system requiring constant supervision, and Musk has said unsupervised FSD for customer vehicles could arrive "at the earliest" by the end of 2026, with complex intersections, poor road markings and weather slowing the rollout.
Investors, meanwhile, appear encouraged. The Verge reports Tesla shares rose nearly six points over the five days before the launch, and analysts see robotaxis as a core justification for the company's $1.18 trillion valuation at a time when its EV sales are slowing under competitive pressure, especially from China.
Why it matters
The Cybercab launch is the clearest test yet of Musk's thesis that full autonomy can be achieved cheaply, with cameras and software alone, rather than the sensor-heavy stacks used by Waymo. If the approach scales, it could sharply lower the cost of running robotaxi fleets; if it stalls, Tesla is exposed, given how much of its valuation rests on autonomy paying off. The muted Austin event — small fleet, friendly audience, no livestream — suggests the company is deliberately managing expectations as it enters this riskiest phase.
