TikTok adds AI shopping assistant and one-click checkout to For You feed

TikTok has launched a conversational AI shopping assistant and one-click in-app checkout, letting users buy directly from brands straight from the For You feed instead of leaving the app.

TikTok adds AI shopping assistant and one-click checkout to For You feed

What TikTok launched

TikTok announced on Monday that it is rolling out two connected features: an AI-powered shopping assistant and a one-click checkout that lets users buy products directly from brands inside the app. According to TechCrunch, the checkout works straight from the For You feed, the algorithmic video stream that serves as the app's main surface. In practice, that means a user can go from seeing a product in a video to purchasing it without ever leaving TikTok.

Inside the Shopping Assistant

TikTok characterises the new Shopping Assistant as a conversational agent built to guide people through both discovery and purchase. The company says the assistant can follow the thread of a conversation and remember a user's stated preferences and needs as the chat continues. The help it offers is practical rather than abstract: real-time answers on product details, shipping, sizing and availability, plus hands-on assistance in completing a transaction.

Taken together, the assistant and the checkout compress the entire purchase funnel — discovery, questions, payment — into a single feed. TechCrunch notes that this could allow TikTok to capture more of users' shopping journeys, and the transaction value attached to them, rather than handing shoppers off to an external site at the moment of purchase.

Built on commerce and payments partners

The features are not a solo effort. TikTok says it built them in partnership with commerce platforms and payment providers including Salesforce, Shopify, Shoplazza and Stripe, among others. That partner list suggests the company is plugging existing merchant infrastructure into its own surfaces rather than asking brands to rebuild their storefronts from scratch, which could lower the barrier for retailers to sell through the feed.

A shift beyond TikTok Shop

Until now, TikTok Shop — the platform's in-house marketplace, live in the US since September 2023 — has carried most of the company's e-commerce ambition. These additions spread shopping more broadly across the app instead of concentrating it in one hub, folding buying capability directly into the main video feed.

There is also a defensive angle. TechCrunch observes that by building an AI shopping assistant into the app, TikTok appears to be hoping users will keep product questions on its platform rather than turning to outside AI tools such as OpenAI's ChatGPT.

The numbers behind the push

Two data points frame why TikTok is pushing harder here. Its own Economic Impact Report, released the week before the announcement, claims that activity on the platform helped generate $81 billion in GDP for US businesses, and that 54 million Americans said they had bought a product after watching a TikTok video.

Separately, the market research firm eMarketer estimates that TikTok Shop generated about $15.8 billion in US sales in 2025, which would represent roughly 18 percent of all US social commerce. Those figures describe a business that is already substantial — and a discovery machine with a proven record of driving purchases that, until now, often completed elsewhere.

Why it matters

The launch marks a notable point in the convergence of social commerce and conversational AI. Feeds built for impulse discovery are turning into points of sale, and chat-based agents are becoming the sales floor where product questions get answered. For TikTok, owning the question-and-answer layer means owning the intent data and the transaction, not just the inspiration.

For general-purpose AI assistants, it is another case of platform-embedded tools competing for queries that might otherwise go to a standalone chatbot. And for merchants already on Shopify or Salesforce-connected infrastructure, TikTok's main feed just became a more direct storefront — with all the pressure on margins, fulfilment and customer service that comes with being available at the swipe of a thumb.
