TikTok adds voice, poll and photo comments to deepen comment-section engagement

TikTok is turning its comment sections into a more conversational space. According to TechCrunch, the company announced on Thursday that comments across the app can now include voice recordings, polls, photo carousels and Live Photos — a bundle of additions that borrows conventions from messaging apps.

Voice comments lead the update

The headline feature is voice comments. Users tap a microphone icon in the comment box and record a message of up to one minute; once posted, anyone viewing the thread can play it back. TikTok framed the feature as an extension of its audio-first culture, saying in a blog post that sound has shaped the platform since its early days and that it is now bringing that quality to comment threads.

The feature is limited to users aged 18 and over, and TechCrunch reports it will roll out globally over the next month.

How TikTok plans to moderate audio

Audio comments raise an obvious moderation question, since spoken content is harder to screen than text. A TikTok spokesperson told TechCrunch that voice comments fall under the same Community Guidelines as other content on the platform. Enforcement combines human reviewers with automated detection tools, including speech-to-text transcription used to identify and remove audio that violates policy.

Polls for creators

Creators can now attach a poll when commenting on their own videos. According to TechCrunch, this capability had previously been available to only a subset of accounts and is now offered worldwide. A poll supports up to five voting options and a duration set by the creator, and results update directly in the comment thread as votes arrive. TikTok suggests uses such as letting an audience choose the next video idea, pick an outfit or decide what to cook.

Photo replies get richer

Photo comments are expanding too. Where users could previously attach only a single image to a comment, they can now include up to nine photos in a carousel — a change rolling out globally over the next month. Separately, Live Photo comments are already available worldwide. These play a short animated preview of the captured moment, giving viewers a glimpse of the scene before the full still image loads.

Why it matters

The update signals where TikTok sees engagement heading. On most platforms, comment sections are an afterthought — a place to drop a quick reaction and scroll on. By importing voice notes, polls and multi-photo replies, conventions familiar from messaging apps, TikTok is trying to make its comment threads a destination where users linger, converse and return to check poll results. For creators, the poll feature in particular offers a lightweight, built-in mechanism for audience participation, replacing the workarounds creators previously relied on.

The moderation detail matters just as much. Audio significantly expands the volume of content automated systems must police, and TikTok's use of speech-to-text transcription indicates how it intends to keep spoken comments within policy. The 18-and-over age gate on voice comments suggests the company recognizes that the format carries additional risk. If these features land as intended, they could push rivals to reinvest in comment sections as engagement surfaces rather than treating them as static infrastructure.
