TiVo will end free one-button commercial skipping in November and sell a paid replacement

TiVo is retiring the free SkipMode one-button ad jump on November 2, 2026, and will trial a paid Premium Auto Commercial Skip add-on whose price has not been announced.

TiVo will end free one-button commercial skipping in November and sell a paid replacement

What is changing

TiVo has started notifying customers that SkipMode, the long-standing feature that lets viewers jump past ad breaks in recorded shows with a single press of the remote, will stop being part of the standard service on November 2, 2026, according to Cord Cutters News. In its place, the company is preparing a paid add-on called Premium Auto Commercial Skip.

TiVo will offer a 30-day free trial of the replacement when November arrives, the report says. Once that trial runs out, anyone who wants to keep automatic or one-button skipping will have to add the new service to their account for an extra monthly charge. The price has not been published, and additional details covering how the service works, which devices and recordings it supports, and exact pricing are supposed to reach customers before the November 2 cutoff.

How SkipMode works today

SkipMode has been a fixture of the TiVo experience for years. Once a supported show finished recording, the service attached markers that let viewers leap from the end of one program segment straight to the start of the next, bypassing the ads in between. On newer TiVo Experience 4 devices, users could switch the feature to automatic, so commercials were skipped without any interaction with the remote.

There were limits to the coverage. According to Cord Cutters News, the feature applied to popular prime-time programming on major networks, with skip markers typically appearing some time after a broadcast aired.

What stays free

Manual skipping is unaffected by the change. Viewers can keep using the 30-second skip button or fast-forwarding, controls that have existed on TiVo boxes for more than two decades and do not rely on the company's commercial-detection data.

Existing recordings that already carry SkipMode markers will continue to behave as they do now until the change takes effect. After November 2, newly recorded programs will no longer receive the free skip data. TiVo says no immediate action is required from subscribers.

The backdrop at Xperi

The shift comes as TiVo's parent company, Xperi, has moved away from manufacturing new DVR hardware and concentrated on its smart-TV operating system and advertising technology. Cord Cutters News notes that automatic commercial skipping was long a selling point that set TiVo apart from cable-operator boxes and rival DVRs. Converting the most convenient version of that capability into an optional paid add-on marks a notable change in the company's relationship with the DVR customers it has left.

Why it matters

This is a case of a feature people bought into being repositioned behind a recurring charge. According to the report, many longtime users have kept their boxes and subscriptions active largely because of SkipMode, even as live-TV viewing declined. Those customers now face a choice: pay an additional monthly fee to retain convenience they already had, or go back to fast-forwarding through commercials by hand.

It also fits a wider pattern in consumer technology, where capabilities once bundled with a product get unbundled into paid tiers once a company's priorities move on. With Xperi focused on smart-TV software and advertising, the remaining DVR base looks less like a growth business and more like a revenue line to be optimised. Pricing details are expected before November 2, which is when customers will be able to judge for themselves how much that convenience is worth.
