Uber launches London's first commercial robotaxi service using Wayve's AI
Uber has launched London's first commercial robotaxi service, powered by autonomous tech from UK startup Wayve and beating Waymo to the market. Rides begin with safety drivers and no geofence.

Uber goes live in London with Wayve
Uber has launched London's first commercial robotaxi service, arriving in a major European city ahead of rival Waymo. According to The Verge, the vehicles run on autonomous driving software from Wayve, a UK-based startup, and complete a UK launch Uber has been working toward for several years.
How riders get matched
London customers who want to try the service can signal a preference in the Uber app's settings. When booking through UberX, Uber Comfort or Uber Electric, they may be paired with a Wayve-powered autonomous vehicle, although Uber says a match is not guaranteed.
The initial fleet uses Ford Mustang Mach-E electric SUVs, with the Nissan Leaf set to follow. Safety drivers licensed by Transport for London, the city's transit authority, will sit in the front seat to monitor the system. Uber says they will not control the driving and will gradually be removed as the service moves to fully driverless operation.
Fleet maintenance and servicing is handled by Uber together with UK fleet operator Otto Car, while Wayve stays responsible for the autonomous driving system itself.
No geofence, no HD maps, no lidar
The most distinctive part of the launch is what the service does without. Uber says there will be no geofence — the virtual boundary that normally confines robotaxis to a mapped operating zone — because Wayve's AV2.0 system is built to operate outside those limits.
Wayve contrasts AV2.0 with what it calls AV1.0: older systems assembled from hand-engineered parts, HD maps and rigid rules, an approach the company argues makes it hard to scale and adapt to new places. AV2.0 instead uses a single AI driver that learns to interpret its surroundings, anticipate risk and adjust to conditions it has not encountered before.
Perception relies on cameras and radar. The cars do not carry lidar, the laser sensor Waymo and most other robotaxi operators depend on, which aligns Wayve with Tesla's approach. The company claims its software is hardware agnostic and can run on whatever sensors and chips an automaker already ships, though lidar could in theory be added if a manufacturer wants it.
Wayve was founded in 2017 by two machine learning PhD students from the University of Cambridge, and says its system keeps learning on the job, adjusting to unfamiliar roads, weather and traffic situations the way a human driver would. Beyond Uber, it is working with Stellantis on hands-free driving technology, and according to TechCrunch it raised $1.2 billion earlier this year from Uber, Nvidia, Stellantis, Nissan and Mercedes-Benz.
A crowded race for London
Waymo has said it will launch its own robotaxi service in London before the end of the year, and Lyft is working with China's Baidu on a service starting in the Brent neighborhood.
Uber and Waymo still operate together in Austin and Atlanta, but the two companies have drifted toward opposing visions: Uber lobbies for a hybrid network that mixes human drivers with robotaxis, while Waymo favors a fully driverless fleet — a split that has fueled speculation the partnership could end. Uber has hedged by signing a wide range of autonomous vehicle partners, including Zoox, Avride, Nuro, Motional, Waabi and Wayve, and says it plans to spend upwards of $10 billion building out its robotaxi business over time.
Why it matters
Most of the world's robotaxis are clustered in the US and China, with a smaller presence in the Middle East. London is therefore an early test of whether demand for driverless ride-hailing exists beyond those markets — and in a dense, complicated European city at that. By arriving first, Uber gets to shape Londoners' first impressions of robotaxi travel. The launch is also the biggest commercial validation yet of Wayve's map-free, lidar-free approach: if a learned AI driver can handle London without a geofence, the case for scaling autonomy without HD maps and expensive sensors becomes much stronger.
