US designates Noblogs.org host Autistici/Inventati as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist

The designation

The news was reported by CrimethInc, an anarchist publisher, which cites the State Department press release announcing the move alongside similar designations for the British group Palestine Action and the transnational Palestinian movement Masar Badil. According to CrimethInc, the department justified the listing by pointing to the collective's far-left politics.

Who is Autistici/Inventati

Founded in 2001, Autistici/Inventati provides privacy-oriented email, website hosting, mailing lists and blogs to people who prefer not to rely on commercial platforms. Its manifesto says the project takes no sponsorship or funding of any kind and survives on voluntary donations, framing communication as something that should be free and universally accessible. The scale is significant: the State Department's own figures, as quoted by CrimethInc, put the platform at roughly 16,000 mailboxes, 1,500 websites, 5,500 mailing lists and 10,000 blogs on custom-built infrastructure. Beyond activist projects, Noblogs hosts book fairs, radio programs and — according to an anti-fascist research group cited by CrimethInc — researchers whose reporting on far-right extremism helped identify participants in the 2017 Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville.

The disputed justification

The State Department alleges that the collective "provides encrypted tools and services to numerous violent far-left extremist groups," naming Portland-based Rose City Antifa. CrimethInc disputes this, arguing the department appears to have conflated Rose City Antifa with a separate project called Rose City Counterinfo. From that alleged error, according to CrimethInc, the department went on to assert a Portland antifa connection to Hamas and Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, on the sole basis that an unnamed "extremist media group" — which the department does not claim had any relationship to Rose City Antifa — had republished statements from those organizations on a Noblogs-hosted website. CrimethInc calls the press release erroneous and dishonest. Sanctions take effect September 25

The practical consequences begin on September 25, 2026. According to the US Treasury Department, any transactions with Autistici/Inventati become prohibited under the Global Terrorism Sanctions Regulations from that date, and violations may result in civil or criminal penalties for both US and foreign persons. For a donation-funded collective, that means US persons and foreign entities exposed to US jurisdiction are legally barred from supporting it, while banks, registrars and payment processors that touch its operations risk sanctions liability. Autistici/Inventati has responded with a statement denying all allegations and pledging not to back down, describing the designation as an attempt by a politically desperate administration to divert attention from its own conduct.

Why it matters

The precedent is the story here. The US government has, in effect, asserted that providing neutral communication services — email, hosting, mailing lists — to users with radical or unpopular politics can constitute support for terrorism, with sanctions attaching to the provider rather than to any proven act of violence.
