Valve's $1,059 Steam Frame launches with Half-Life: Alyx running natively on the headset
Valve's first headset since 2019 starts at $1,059 and ships with a native ARM64 port of Half-Life: Alyx, positioning the device as a wearable gaming PC rather than a pure VR headset.

Valve has released the Steam Frame, its first headset since the Index arrived in 2019. According to The Verge, the device starts at $1,059 with 256GB of storage, with a 1TB model at $1,299, and every unit includes a copy of Half-Life: Alyx that Valve has ported to run directly on the headset, no desktop PC required.
A lottery for the first batch
As The Verge's Jay Peters reports, Valve is managing launch demand the same way it did for the Steam Machine: a waitlist combined with a lottery for the first wave of units. Buyers can register for the configuration they want until September 17 at 10AM PT. After that deadline, Valve will randomize the entries and notify winners, who can place orders on September 18 and then have 72 hours to complete the purchase. Anyone not selected can still join the waitlist.
Regional pricing runs from $1,529 CAD, €1,049 and £889 for the 256GB model to $1,859 CAD, €1,279 and £1,089 for the 1TB version. The headset was announced late last year alongside the new Steam Controller and Steam Machine, and while Valve originally aimed for an early 2026 launch, the release slipped partly because of surging memory prices, The Verge reports. The Controller shipped in May, the Steam Machine in June, and the Frame completes the lineup.
Half-Life: Alyx with no PC attached
The bundled game is the headline technical trick. Valve ported the entire 2020 VR title to ARM64 so it runs natively on the Frame's Qualcomm chip, which The Verge's review identifies as a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. When the game launched it demanded a VR-ready Windows machine with a midrange graphics card; it now runs on mobile-class silicon, and reviewer Sean Hollister reports that community mods and extra levels work too, with his existing saves waiting for him on first launch.
Valve spokesperson Kaci Aitchison told The Verge that the headset's eye-tracking cameras enable foveated rendering, which concentrates full resolution where the user is actually looking, and that this plus the Frame's 16GB of VRAM made the port feasible without cutting objects or assets. The effort took roughly a year of additional work in the Vulkan drivers and SteamVR, and Valve says most of it was not specific to Alyx, so the fixes and optimizations carry over to every other game on the device. The company credits its open-source drivers with letting engineers iterate quickly. Visually the port makes compromises compared to a desktop rig, but Hollister writes that it feels like a full PC VR game rather than the scaled-back experience typical of standalone headsets.
The Frame does not require ports, though. It can stream flat and VR games from a PC, run Windows titles through Valve's translation layers, and load apps built for Android-based headsets via a layer called Lepton.
A wearable PC that happens to do VR
The Verge's review argues the Frame should not be judged as a VR headset at all, but as an experimental spatial computer in the spirit of the Apple Vision Pro, aimed at gamers who want their existing flat Steam libraries in a head-worn form. Hollister describes working inside six virtual monitors at once, mixing streamed Windows desktops with Linux running locally on the headset, and stretching a streamed game across an entire living-room wall while the wand controllers emulate a full gamepad. An included 6GHz wireless dongle enables short-range PC streaming even on weak home Wi-Fi.
It is also, in his telling, very much early hardware. Games crashed hard enough to require reboots, the interface occasionally vanished, and adding a seventh virtual screen brought everything down. Battery life runs one to two hours, the fan is audible, and standalone flat-game performance currently trails the aging Steam Deck, though the 2160x2160-per-eye displays allow surprisingly high virtual-screen resolutions. On comfort, the verdict is unambiguous: at roughly one pound with the optional top strap, it is the most comfortable headset he has worn.
Accessories fill the gaps
The Frame ships without a USB-C charger, which Valve sells separately for $29. A $59 ergonomic kit adds the top strap, a light-blocking nose piece and hand straps that let players open their hands without dropping the controllers, while a $49 kit holds replacement gaskets and cushions. A partner-built $149 Arcturus Vision Camera plugs into the nose bridge port to add color passthrough and 5K60 10-bit HDR spatial video recording, replacing the default monochrome view. A modular enthusiast kit with a swappable strap, stackable magnetic second battery and off-ear speakers based on the Index design is planned, with no date or price announced.
Why it matters
The Steam Frame extends Valve's Steam Deck playbook, running software where it was never meant to run, to a face-worn computer. The Alyx port is the proof of concept: foveated rendering, eye tracking and ample VRAM let a flagship PC VR game run on phone-class silicon with no asset cuts, and the underlying driver work benefits the whole platform. It also clarifies Valve's priorities, since the company said in 2025 that it had no new VR content in development, making the Frame more about flat libraries and wearable computing than a VR revival. At over $1,000, it is expensive, buggy beta-stage hardware, but it sketches a future where the headset and the PC converge into one device.
