Waymo adds Gemini-powered in-car assistant to Ojai robotaxis
Waymo is testing a Gemini-based conversational assistant inside its Ojai robotaxis, letting riders adjust the cabin and ask trip questions while the Waymo Driver keeps full responsibility for driving.

What Waymo launched
Waymo has rolled out a beta conversational assistant, Gemini in Waymo, for riders taking trips in its Ojai robotaxi experience. According to dev.to, which summarized the company's official announcement, riders summon the assistant through a Gemini icon on the cabin screen and then speak to it in natural language. The capability is aimed squarely at the passenger side of the ride, not at navigation or autonomous operation.
Dev.to notes that Waymo framed the feature in a July announcement, with a Google update in August placing it within a broader Ojai cabin experience. Waymo has also signaled continued work on its tri-screen interface and a feature it calls Calm Mode, but the confirmed Gemini functionality stays focused on conversation inside the cabin.
What riders can ask
The first beta covers a deliberately narrow set of tasks. Riders can adjust parts of the cabin, such as requesting a particular air conditioning temperature. They can ask about the trip in progress, seek information about places and landmarks nearby, or make general knowledge queries hands-free. As dev.to describes it, the point is to make the cabin screen feel more conversational and responsive — a convenience layer on top of the ride rather than a tool with any operational authority.
A strict line around the driving stack
The defining constraint is what the assistant is not allowed to touch. Waymo says the Waymo Driver, its autonomous system, retains complete control of the vehicle, and that Gemini plays no part in any decision about how the car is driven. The assistant lives in the passenger-experience layer and is never offered as a conversational route into the driving software.
The privacy model mirrors that separation. Rather than running continuously in the background, Gemini stays dormant until a rider deliberately engages it. It also avoids live driving data, touching ride information only when a rider explicitly asks something about the journey. The assistant is therefore positioned as something that responds to specific requests, not an always-on observer of the trip.
What remains unannounced
Several questions are left open. The announcement establishes no rollout beyond Ojai, no separate pricing, no developer access and no automotive API. Waymo has likewise not described the feature as a fleet-management tool or a way to automate business workflows, and those areas remain unresolved as the beta develops.
Why it matters
Gemini in Waymo is one of the clearest examples yet of generative AI shipping inside a commercial mobility service while being kept entirely away from safety-critical functions. The deployment draws a sharp distinction between two things often blurred under the label of in-car AI: a chatbot that answers questions and tweaks climate settings, and software that actually drives a vehicle. Stating that boundary plainly — in the architecture, in the data access rules and in what riders are told — reduces the risk of confusion about which system bears responsibility for safety.
The pattern is also a useful template for other industries. Instead of wiring a general-purpose assistant directly into operational systems on day one, Waymo started with small, well-defined jobs backed by firm limits on what the assistant can see and do. For companies building customer-facing voice interfaces, the takeaway is that conversational features can launch narrow and still deliver value, provided the access boundaries are explicit and the system performs reliably in its real setting. Whether Waymo now expands Gemini beyond Ojai, opens it up to third parties, or connects it to broader services will indicate how quickly this model of rider-facing AI spreads through consumer transport.
