Waymo resumes San Antonio robotaxi service five months after flash flood failures
Waymo has restarted paid robotaxi rides in San Antonio with software meant to detect standing water, five months after flash floods stranded several vehicles and carried one away.

Waymo is operating robotaxis in San Antonio again, roughly five months after flash flooding carried away one of its driverless vehicles and left several others stranded, according to TechCrunch.
What happened during the April floods
During severe storms in April, multiple Waymo robotaxis in San Antonio became trapped as streets filled with water. As TechCrunch reports, the vehicles reduced speed when they neared flooded roads but did not come to a halt, leaving them exposed as conditions worsened. At least one vehicle was pulled away by the current.
The episode drew attention because it was not a conventional collision: the failure lay in recognising and withdrawing from a hazardous environmental condition rather than negotiating traffic.
The recall and new restrictions
Waymo responded in May by issuing a recall and barring its robotaxis from operating in areas judged to carry a heightened flooding risk, TechCrunch reports. Around the same time, the company briefly paused operations in other Texan cities, though those services were later restored.
The combination of a recall, geographic restrictions and temporary suspensions amounted to Waymo pulling back its fleet until it understood why the vehicles had driven into standing water instead of stopping or rerouting.
Back on San Antonio streets
The San Antonio Express-News, which first reported the restart, says the relaunched service will field dozens of vehicles across a 60-mile area covering downtown and San Antonio International Airport. Waymo told the newspaper it has since changed its software so the robotaxis can better detect standing water and avoid it going forward.
The return makes San Antonio part of a paid network that now spans 15 U.S. cities, according to TechCrunch, a footprint that has kept growing even as the company absorbed the operational lessons of the spring floods.
Why it matters
The April incident became a pointed case study in how autonomous vehicles cope with rare, dangerous conditions that sit outside everyday driving. A human faced with rising water on a road would likely stop or turn around; the floods showed how hard it is to encode that judgement reliably into a driving system.
The restart matters on two levels. For Waymo, it demonstrates the cycle that regulators, city officials and riders increasingly expect from robotaxi operators: pause operations, diagnose the failure, fix the software, limit exposure to the risk, and only then relaunch — rather than treating a serious incident as terminal for a market.
For the wider autonomous vehicle industry, it sets a template for handling weather-related failures, an area every competitor will face as it scales into new cities with unfamiliar flood plains and storm patterns. The genuine test of the new water-detection software, however, is still ahead: the next flash flood to hit a Waymo city.
