Windows 11 Insider builds add Xbox gaming mode shortcuts and expanded search filters

Microsoft's latest Windows 11 Insider builds let gamers tweak Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and power settings without leaving Xbox mode, while search gains filters, system actions and richer results.

Windows 11 Insider builds add Xbox gaming mode shortcuts and expanded search filters

Xbox gaming mode gets quick settings

Microsoft's latest Windows 11 Insider builds introduce shortcuts designed to keep Xbox gaming mode self-contained. According to The Verge, players can now adjust common system controls — including Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and power settings — directly from within gaming mode, rather than dropping out to the desktop or digging through the full settings app to make a change.

Search learns to filter, act and inform

The same builds carry what The Verge describes as comprehensive improvements to Windows search. Results can now be filtered by category, separating files, actions and web results so a query can be narrowed to the kind of outcome the user actually wants.

The search box is also becoming a place where things happen, not just a place where things are found. The Verge reports that it can now trigger system actions such as adjusting the screen's brightness or the system volume, and it can reach out to a connected phone to perform actions there as well — including placing calls.

Individual results are getting more informative too. File entries can surface details such as when a document was last changed and who created it, while web results can pull in graphical data like share-price movements and weather forecasts, according to The Verge.

A feedback loop for better results

Microsoft is also building a training mechanism into the experience. The Verge notes that results now come with thumbs-up and thumbs-down buttons embedded alongside them, letting users signal which answers were useful so the search feature can improve over time.

Availability

The changes arrive through two preview channels. The Verge identifies Beta Build 26220.9836 and Experimental Build 26340.9843 as the builds carrying the update, both available to Windows Insiders now. Microsoft has documented the full change list in a blog post, and as with anything shipping through the Insider program, these features are being tested ahead of any wider rollout.

Why it matters

Both changes point at the same goal: reducing how often a user has to abandon what they are doing. For gaming mode, that means a simple settings toggle no longer breaks the console-style experience Microsoft has been cultivating for the Xbox crowd on PC. For search, it means the search box is evolving from a file-and-web lookup tool into a command surface that can change system settings, operate a paired phone and return data-rich answers without opening another app.

The feedback loop is the most telling detail. Embedding rating controls in individual results suggests Microsoft expects search to become personal and adaptive rather than static, tuning itself based on what each user signals is helpful. That raises the stakes for how well the feature performs — and how gracefully it handles the phone integration — by the time it might reach the stable version of Windows 11.
