Windows 11 Photos app merges PC, OneDrive and iCloud galleries in major redesign
Microsoft's redesigned Windows 11 Photos app unifies local, OneDrive and iCloud libraries in one gallery, and ships a rebuilt editor that launches faster and handles HEIC, WebP and SVG files.

One gallery for local, cloud and Apple photos
Microsoft has overhauled the Photos app for Windows 11, and the headline change is consolidation: images and videos stored on the PC, in OneDrive and in iCloud now appear together in a single gallery. According to The Verge, the goal is to let people manage and view their collections without hopping between apps or devices.
Bringing the libraries together takes some setup. The Verge reports that users need to enable Camera Backup in the OneDrive mobile app on iOS or Android, and follow Apple's instructions for installing iCloud for Windows. Once the sources are connected, the combined gallery supports browsing by date, creating and sharing albums, and searching for photos by description or by the people who appear in them. Files can be browsed whether the device is online or not, and Microsoft says photos remain available on the device even without a connection.
A rebuilt editor
The editing side of the app has been rewritten from scratch, according to Microsoft. The company claims the new editor launches 25 percent faster than before and organises its tools into four groups: Crop, Enhance, Repair and Stylize.
Format handling has also improved. The editor now preserves HDR quality throughout the editing process, and it can edit and save HEIC and WebP images without converting them away from their original formats — a notable change for anyone working with iPhone photos, which default to HEIC, or with web imagery in WebP.
Viewer gains speed and SVG support
The photo viewer received a cleaner layout along with its own performance work. Microsoft's figures, cited by The Verge, put the viewer's launch at 15 percent faster, with HEIC images opening up to 30 percent faster than in the previous version. Media type support has been expanded to include SVG files, giving the app coverage of a vector format commonly used for icons and graphics on the web.
Rolling out now, wider release later
The redesigned Photos experience is being released as an update for Windows Insiders on Windows 11 starting now, The Verge reports. Microsoft expects a full launch for all Windows 11 users later this year. As is typical with Insider builds, features and timings can shift before the broad rollout.
Why it matters
Photo management on Windows has long been fragmented: local files lived in one place, OneDrive backups in another, and iPhone photos reachable only through separate iCloud tooling. Folding all three into one gallery closes a genuine gap for the many households that mix a Windows PC with an iPhone, and it puts the Photos app in more direct competition with Apple's and Google's cross-platform photo libraries.
The technical upgrades matter too. Faster launch times and quicker HEIC handling address the sluggishness users have complained about in recent Photos versions, while preserving HDR through edits and saving HEIC and WebP without re-encoding respect both image quality and file compatibility. If the unified gallery performs as promised in the stable release, the default Windows photo experience becomes considerably more capable without requiring third-party software.
