Agentic coding tool Conductor joins Meta, cloud service shuts down this month

Conductor, an agentic coding tool launched in July 2025, is joining Meta. The team announced the move on November 4 in a post on its site that surfaced on the Hacker News front page. The same announcement set out a fast wind-down of Conductor Cloud, the product's hosted service, with user data deletion beginning Friday, November 20. The local version of the app will keep working and receiving updates into early 2027.

A three-week shutdown

According to the announcement, the hosted side of the product is being retired on the following schedule:

  • November 4: Conductor stops accepting new sign-ups and app downloads. Existing free users can no longer upgrade to a paid pro plan, while existing pro users keep pro features at no charge.
  • November 13: Conductor Cloud goes read-only. Old chats stay viewable and exportable, but no new messages can be sent. Active subscribers will receive refunds.
  • November 20: Deletion of Conductor Cloud user data begins. Users are being asked to export anything they want to keep before this date.

Conductor says it has built a way to move cloud workspaces onto the local app, and that it will help users through the transition by email.

The local app keeps working

Local Conductor is unaffected by the cloud shutdown. The team says it will keep adding new models and shipping critical bug fixes until early 2027, and it expects to have a new product in users' hands around that time. The announcement describes ambitious plans for a next-generation interface but does not detail what it will look like or whether it will carry the Conductor name under Meta. The post also does not disclose deal terms or say what the team will work on at Meta.

Another AI toolmaker absorbed

Conductor was built around the idea of letting AI agents write most of your code, coordinating a team of them rather than a single assistant. The announcement recalls that when the tool shipped in mid-2025, that premise still sounded extreme to many developers. Sixteen months later, agentic coding is one of the most contested areas of developer tooling, and the pattern of small teams with novel interfaces being folded into large platforms continues.

Why it matters

The acquisition extends the consolidation of AI developer tooling, with a popular independent coding tool moving inside one of the industry's biggest labs. For Conductor users, the stakes are immediate and practical: anything stored in Conductor Cloud is deleted after November 20, subscribers should confirm their refunds, and cloud-dependent workflows need to move local within weeks. More broadly, it is a reminder of the risk of building daily workflows on small tools, since an acquisition can retire a paid service on roughly three weeks' notice. It also signals that the next interface for agent-driven development may be designed inside Meta rather than shipped as an independent product.
