AI assistant Instinct gives every user a dedicated email address for its agent

AI assistant Instinct gives every user a dedicated email address for its agent

Instinct, the AI assistant recently valued at $2.5 billion, is giving each of its users a dedicated email address for their agent, according to TechCrunch. Founder Noah Shinn announced the change on Tuesday, describing it as an early move toward agents that can hold and manage accounts of their own instead of borrowing the user's identity for every errand.

An inbox of its own

The new addresses let Instinct sign up for services, message businesses and chase follow-ups without filling the user's personal inbox with confirmations and replies. In examples Shinn posted on X, the agent can email a restaurant with a specific request, check a business's availability, or register for a service it needs in order to finish a task.

The flow also works in reverse. Shinn suggested users forward emails to Instinct when the agent needs information to get something done — for instance, sending over an order confirmation so Instinct can handle a product return: contacting support, supplying the order details, checking whether the user wants money back or a replacement, and coming back with a printable label.

Instinct's address can also be added to group threads so the agent can track what is exchanged, or be handed a long thread and asked which decisions are still open and which tasks are due when. The agent is designed to act on its own and only loop in the user when it needs a decision.

According to TechCrunch, Instinct has reserved some addresses for its earliest users, while everyone else can claim one at mail.instinct.com.

The latest in a series of upgrades

The email feature arrives alongside several other recent changes. Last week, Instinct announced a 1Password partnership that lets the agent log into users' existing accounts rather than have them hand over credentials directly. A new location-sharing feature tells Instinct where the user currently is, so it can find nearby restaurants, map routes, build itineraries and answer questions about location history, such as where the car was parked or which restaurant was visited last month. In August, a Stripe integration gave the agent a way to pay, letting it book trips, classes and appointments and complete purchases.

Taken together, the pieces add up to an assistant that increasingly operates in the world on the user's behalf: it knows where you are, can spend your money, can reach your existing accounts and can now hold conversations under its own identity.

Why it matters

Giving an AI agent its own email address is a small technical change with outsized implications. For users, it removes a recurring friction point: no more handing a personal address to every service for one-off tasks, and no mid-task interventions to forward confirmations or complete sign-ups.

For businesses, it introduces a layer of ambiguity. A company exchanging emails with an Instinct address may not know whether it is dealing with a person or a proxy, which complicates identity checks, marketing relationships and support workflows built on the assumption of a human reader. Many customers, meanwhile, may welcome the buffer — plenty are tired of surrendering an email address or phone number to complete a simple task.

The move also signals where agent-based assistants are heading. Rather than chat interfaces that only answer questions, Instinct is assembling the ingredients — email, payments through Stripe, logins through 1Password, location awareness — for persistent agents that transact and negotiate on their own. Whether the services on the other end of those emails are prepared for an inbox full of autonomous agents is another matter.
