Alibaba confirms Qwen 4 is training; signals point to a near-term 27B release
Alibaba confirmed at Apsara that Qwen 4 is in training on a new-generation architecture, with timing signals suggesting a release within weeks — and the 27B tier is what matters for local AI.

What Alibaba has actually said
According to a dev.to analysis, Alibaba used its Apsara Conference in Hangzhou on 22 September 2026 to confirm that Qwen 4 is in training. Qwen lead Liu Dayiheng described the model as built on a "new-generation architecture" and arriving "very soon" — but attached no date, no specifications, no benchmark results and no licensing terms.
The widely quoted 5–10 trillion parameter figures, the dev.to piece notes, belong to the longer-term Qwen 4.5 and Qwen 5 roadmap, not to Qwen 4 itself. The current flagship, Qwen3.8-Max, is a roughly 2.4-trillion-parameter mixture-of-experts model with about 95 billion active parameters and a one-million-token context window.
Two other items from the same announcement are relevant. Qwen3.8-Flash-Next, released in late August 2026, is described in Alibaba's own materials as "a preview of the Qwen 4 architecture" — the only Qwen 4-adjacent model that can be run today. The broader roadmap also names the Zhenwu V900 accelerator from T-Head, a target of more than 20 GW of Alibaba Cloud data-center capacity by 2032, and several multimodal releases later in the year.
Timing signals suggest weeks, not months
None of the circulating timing claims come from Alibaba. Per dev.to, three windows have made the rounds: a September window tied to a July roadmap leak that passed without a launch, an end-of-October claim on r/LocalLLaMA attributed to someone familiar with a launch partner, and a cadence-based inference of October to early November from tracker threads. The Manifold prediction market prices a launch before 1 November 2026 at roughly 74 percent — read that as an expectation of weeks rather than a firm date.
The concrete precedent is the current generation's rollout: Qwen3.8-Max launched on 3 August and open 27B weights appeared on Hugging Face roughly ten days later. Flash-Next shipping before the flagship suggests Alibaba has separated revealing the architecture from shipping the full model. For local users, the Hugging Face release is the event to watch, since it has historically lagged the announcement.
Why the 27B tier carries the story
For local AI, the consequential detail is the 27B dense tier, which Alibaba has shipped in every recent generation under Apache 2.0, and which currently runs on a single consumer GPU. Comparing vendor-reported scores across the last two 27B generations, dev.to finds the largest movement in agentic and long-horizon work: Terminal-Bench 2.1 rose from 63.4 to 73.0 and SWE-bench Pro from 53.5 to 61.7, while GPQA Diamond inched from 87.8 to 89.2 as it nears saturation.
The dev.to forecast — explicitly a projection, not a leak — puts a Qwen 4 27B at roughly 76–82 on Terminal-Bench 2.1 and 65–72 on SWE-bench Pro. The author cautions that linear extrapolation would overstate the case, since gains get harder as benchmarks saturate and past improvements came from specific training and post-training decisions that may not repeat.
Flash-Next as a measurable preview
Flash-Next is the one piece of Qwen 4 evidence that can be benchmarked today. On Alibaba's own comparisons it leads Qwen3.8-27B by 16.5 points on DeepSWE 1.1 and 22.3 points on JobBench, with modest movement on GPQA Diamond and LiveCodeBench v6. One caveat: Flash-Next is not a 27B dense model but a much larger MoE with roughly 125 billion main parameters, 6 billion active, plus about 51 billion n-gram embedding parameters — so its results cannot be credited to architecture alone.
The quantization ladder it will land on
Whatever its scores, a 27B model will be deployed quantized. The dev.to ladder for the current generation shows Q4_K_XL at about 17.6 GB and roughly 5.2 true bits per weight retaining 99.9 percent of the BF16 aggregate score, ternary builds holding up at 5.9 GB, 1-bit QAT reaching phone-class at 3.9 GB, and conventional IQ2_XXS collapsing into the low 70s. Knowledge, coding and language tasks keep nearly all of their score even at 1-bit; arithmetic and multilingual ability are what the extra bits buy.
Why it matters
Almost everything specific being shared about Qwen 4 — variant names, dates, scores — traces back to community threads and markets rather than Alibaba, so separating confirmation from inference is the first discipline here. The practical stakes are concentrated in the 27B tier: dev.to's cross-source picture places the 25–34B class where open models deliver near-frontier capability per gigabyte, and a Qwen 4 27B that holds the Q4_K_XL position would inherit that slot. If the agentic coding gains hold at a size that fits one consumer GPU under a permissive license, self-hosters get a meaningful generational step without touching a data center — and the Hugging Face drop, not the keynote, is when that becomes real.
