Amazon refreshes Echo lineup with $499 Echo Show 16 and Echo Studio camera

Amazon unveiled a $499.99 Echo Show 16 with customizable always-on homescreens, an Echo Studio with a built-in room-monitoring camera, and a new Echo Dot that doubles as a smart home hub.

Amazon refreshes Echo lineup with $499 Echo Show 16 and Echo Studio camera

Amazon has unveiled a broad hardware refresh anchored by the Echo Show 16, a $499.99 smart display the company is positioning as a central household hub, according to The Verge. Alongside it came an Echo Studio speaker with a built-in camera and a redesigned Echo Dot that folds in a smart home hub and a Wi-Fi extender.

A 16-inch display with swappable homescreens

According to The Verge, the Echo Show 16 is available to preorder now at $499.99 with a wall mount in the box, while an anti-glare Nanomatte version runs $569.99. Amazon is offering a $100 preorder discount ahead of the device's release later this year. The price sits high relative to the rest of the lineup: twice the $250 Echo Show 11 and $200 above Apple's new HomeView display, a gap The Verge suggests may deter even devoted Alexa households.

The centerpiece is a set of four selectable Screen Styles, covering family organization, a smart home dashboard, Alexa widgets, and a photo frame. These screens can either stay on permanently or surface when someone walks up. Amazon's head of devices and services, Panos Panay, told The Verge the Show 16 shares much of its underlying engineering with the Alexa Tablet Pro 12, and it runs a MediaTek chip rather than Amazon's own AZ3 silicon.

The hardware is thinner than the Echo Show 15 and 21, with slimmer bezels, and it supports VESA mounts alongside optional stands ($124.99 for a swivel/tilt model, $69.99 for a static one). A speaker bar running the length of the screen holds eight custom woofers and two tweeters, and a new 13-megapixel wide-angle camera adds infrared night vision for Visual ID, video calls, and use as a room-monitoring security camera. The device also runs the full Fire TV interface and ships with a redesigned remote.

One caveat: of the two ambient screensaver modes, Alexa Recommendations will keep showing full-screen ads, incoming VP of Alexa and Echo Aidan Marcuss confirmed to The Verge, though ads stay confined to that screen and the mode can be switched off.

Alexa Plus gets a memory and a 3D home map

The Show 16 runs Alexa Plus, and The Verge reports the assistant has been upgraded to draw on more models, reason with more depth, multitask better, and handle both detailed and vague requests more effectively, according to current VP Daniel Rausch, who moves to a new role at Amazon next month. A next best actions feature proactively suggests follow-ups, and responses now collapse into Cards that persist across the Show, the Alexa app, and Alexa.com, serving as a memory users can revisit or pin.

A map view rebuilt from the one introduced in 2023 offers an overhead view of the home and surrounding neighborhood, updates in real time as devices are toggled, and integrates exterior Ring cameras, so a figure appearing near the house can be tapped for a live feed.

Notably, The Verge reports the new interface will eventually reach existing Show devices, but while the customizable homescreens are free on the Show 16, older hardware will need a paid subscription to unlock them. Amazon did not disclose pricing or a timeline.

Echo Studio adds eyes; Echo Dot adds a hub

The Echo Studio with Home Camera costs $249.99 in graphite, with the camera-less Studio remaining on sale at $219.99. The built-in camera can monitor a room while you are out, let users show things to Alexa, and will later support video calls on Fire TV devices. Audio upgrades include Advanced Room Adaptation, which continuously tunes output to the space, and Adaptive Volume, which adjusts loudness based on where the listener is standing.

The updated Echo Dot is available now for $99.99 in graphite, glacier white, agave green, and coral pink. It runs the AZ3 chip, gains a fourth microphone for better Alexa pickup, and includes a hub supporting Zigbee, Matter, and Thread, plus a built-in Eero extender that Amazon says adds up to 1,000 square feet of Wi-Fi coverage.

Why it matters

The refresh shows Amazon pushing smart displays from voice-first gadgets with screens attached toward touch-first household computers, and pricing them accordingly. The subscription requirement for bringing the new homescreen software to older Shows signals a shift toward monetizing software on hardware customers already own, while the camera-equipped Studio and the Dot's built-in hub and extender pull Amazon deeper into home security and networking. The Verge's reviewer remains skeptical of the category, noting smart displays have long promised to do everything without doing any of it especially well; at $499, the Show 16 makes answering that criticism considerably more urgent for Amazon.
