Apple confirms inner display cracking on some iPhone Duo units, offers replacements

Apple confirms inner display cracking on some iPhone Duo units, offers replacements

Apple has confirmed that a display defect is affecting some units of the iPhone Duo, its first foldable phone, following a wave of complaints from early buyers about cracked inner screens. In a statement shared with Bloomberg, 9to5Mac and The Verge, Apple spokesperson Alex Kirschner said the company is aware of a problem with the inner display on what it described as "a small number of iPhone Duo units," and advised affected owners to contact AppleCare for a replacement.

What Apple is saying

Alongside the acknowledgement, Apple pointed to what it characterized as a positive early response, including developers quickly updating their apps for the phone's folding form factor. Kirschner added two details that help frame the scope: most units are not susceptible to the defect, and on affected devices the problem surfaces quickly. For buyers, that implies a device that has survived the first days of use without display trouble is likely fine, though the only remedy Apple has offered so far is a replacement through AppleCare.

What users have reported

The complaints began shortly after the phone went on sale. According to The Verge, a consistent pattern has emerged: the hinge becomes stiff, and opening the device produces a crack in the inner screen, often accompanied by a bright line running from the center toward the right side. Bloomberg, cited by TechCrunch, reports that some users saw cracking within hours or days of purchase, with some describing a loud crunching sound before the damage appeared and others reporting broader display malfunctions. Separately, 404 Media has covered complaints of deep creases forming down the middle of the folding panel on a phone that TechCrunch pegs at around $2,000.

At least one customer has already been through the replacement process: a user in Australia told The Verge that an Apple Store swapped their faulty unit immediately.

iFixit's teardown points to a possible cause

iFixit published a teardown of the phone over the weekend and offered a hypothesis for the failures. In the region where the damage tends to appear, the folding screen may be pressing against a structural bar that sits at the center of the device. If the panel is repeatedly squeezed against that bar as the phone opens and closes, that would line up with the location of the cracks and creases users have been reporting. iFixit's finding is a hypothesis rather than a confirmed root cause, and Apple has not said what is behind the defect.

Why it matters

The iPhone Duo was Apple's attempt to succeed where other manufacturers have struggled for years: foldable phones have a long history of hinge and screen failures, and Apple pitched the Duo, unveiled at its Surprise and Shine event, as the device that finally got the notoriously tricky form factor right. Cracking screens within days of release undercut that claim almost immediately.

The incident also lands at a sensitive moment for the company. The Duo is among the first devices to launch since John Ternus took over as CEO from Tim Cook, and an early hardware quality problem is an unwelcome test of the new leadership's launch execution. On the positive side, Apple has moved quickly to acknowledge the issue publicly and offer replacements, though key questions remain open: how many units carry the defect, and what exactly is causing the screens to fail.
