Apple finally ships a smart display

Apple has formally entered the smart display market with the HomeView, a $299 device pairing a 7-inch square screen with a speaker base and the company's redesigned Siri AI assistant. According to TechCrunch, the long-rumored hub was unveiled on Tuesday, with preorders open immediately and units reaching buyers on November 13.

The Verge, which saw the hardware in person in New York, describes a compact unit whose screen sits on an aluminum base via an adjustable stainless steel arm, in a footprint the reviewer found less imposing than Google's Nest Hub Max or Amazon's Echo Show 11. Two versions carry the same price: a tabletop model with the full speaker base and a wall-mountable variant that The Verge says offers plug-in, in-wall power and PoE mounting options. Both come in silver, starlight, rose pink and space gray, with no physical buttons and no cover over the front-facing camera, which Apple says is used only for video calls and facial recognition.

Siri AI with per-person switching

The headline software feature is multi-user recognition. TechCrunch reports that HomeView can identify up to six household members and reconfigure itself for whoever approaches, surfacing their messages, calendar entries, notes and preferred apps before switching again when someone else walks up.

The privacy mechanism behind this is notable. Apple's product page states that the A18 chip inside the device contains Secure Exclaves, a compartment that processes camera and microphone feeds in a way that cannot be reached by the operating system or by Apple itself, allowing face and voice recognition without exposing the underlying audio and visual data. Personal content appears only when a paired iPhone or iPad is on the same Wi-Fi network, has been recently unlocked, and the user's face is recognized.

According to The Verge, Siri AI on HomeView is functionally the same assistant that arrived on iPhone with iOS 27: it answers open-ended questions, retains context across chained requests, and uses personal context drawn from messages, calendars and email. The site notes there are no display-specific additions, and that chained voice commands for home hardware only work within certain device categories — lights in two rooms at once, for example, but not locking a door and adjusting a thermostat in a single command. Apple's page adds that Siri AI is English-only at launch, that usage limits may apply, and that conversations sync to the Siri app on other Apple devices.

A control center for Apple Home

HomeView serves as an Apple Home hub, a Matter controller and a Thread border router, according to The Verge, letting it orchestrate both Apple Home and third-party Matter devices. The launch also comes with new first-party accessories: The Verge cites cameras, thermostats and a door lock, while TechCrunch lists a smart deadbolt, security cameras and a doorbell that can sound a chime on the hub when someone arrives.

The Home app on the device shows live camera feeds — up to nine streams at once, per The Verge — alongside controls for lighting, climate, scenes and automations. Apple says the device can also detect the sound of smoke and carbon monoxide alarms and send alerts to an iPhone, iPad or Apple Watch, and that Apple Intelligence groups related notifications and generates descriptions of video footage.

A batch of Apple apps ships preloaded, including Calendar, Messages, Photos, FaceTime, Notes, Reminders, Music and Podcasts, with Apple's marketing leaning heavily on kitchen scenarios such as step-by-step recipes and stacked timers. The Verge reports that third-party audio apps like Spotify and Audible work through the CarPlay architecture, though no third-party video apps were available at launch. On audio hardware, two drivers sit in the display with a woofer and force-cancelling passive radiators in the base; The Verge's early listen placed the sound above the HomePod mini but short of the full HomePod.

Availability

The Verge reports the device launches in eight countries — the US, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa and India — with shipping from November 13.

Why it matters

The HomeView puts Apple into direct competition with Amazon's Echo Show line and Google's Nest Hub for the first time, a market where the company's track record is patchy: the HomePod never matched rivals' popularity, as TechCrunch notes. The hub was reportedly delayed by problems with Siri AI itself, so shipping it suggests those engineering issues are at least partly resolved and gives Apple a consumer showcase for its assistant work beyond the phone. The multi-user approach, gated by Secure Exclaves and paired, unlocked iPhones, is Apple's distinguishing privacy pitch in a category long shadowed by concerns about always-on microphones and cameras. And per TechCrunch, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman has previously reported that Apple could extend the concept with a robotic-arm version, making this a first step rather than an endpoint.
