Apple TV 4K gains hands-free Siri AI and far-field mics in first refresh since 2022

Apple's fourth-generation Apple TV 4K adds far-field microphones for remote-free Siri AI, a Find My remote with a speaker, and four-speaker HomePod surround sound for $299, shipping November 13.

Apple TV 4K gains hands-free Siri AI and far-field mics in first refresh since 2022

Apple has released its first new Apple TV 4K in four years, a $299 streaming box that listens for voice commands through built-in far-field microphones and runs the new Siri AI assistant. According to The Verge, the fourth-generation device was introduced at Apple's "Welcome Home" event in New York alongside a wider smart-home lineup, and it goes on sale November 13 with preorders already open.

Hands-free Siri without a remote

TechCrunch reports that the box carries three far-field microphones, so viewers can summon Siri by speaking instead of reaching for the remote or routing requests through a paired HomePod. Powering the AI features is an A19 chip, which The Verge notes debuted in last year's iPhone 17.

Siri AI arrives in beta and initially works in English in eight countries: the US, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa and India. The assistant handles natural-language requests such as asking for the best nature documentaries currently on the platform (The Verge's example), while TechCrunch points to queries like which Apple TV shows won Emmys this year or where a particular series was filmed.

One quirk: unlike on HomePod speakers, Siri does not read answers aloud on the Apple TV. The Verge describes responses appearing either as full-screen search results or in a small text bubble; in a demo, asking whether the football club in an episode of Ted Lasso was real produced a short on-screen answer rather than spoken audio.

Recommendations with personal context

Beyond general search, Apple is leaning on personal context, which draws on data from an Apple Intelligence-capable iPhone. The Verge's example: say "Play that show my friend texted me," and Siri can search your messages to surface the title. Both TechCrunch and The Verge frame this as catching up to rivals, since Google has brought Gemini to its TV Streamer and Amazon has shipped Alexa Plus on Fire TV.

Bigger surround setups and a remote you can hear

The new model supports pairing up to four compatible HomePod speakers, either second-generation HomePods or the newly announced HomePod Mini 2, in surround configurations, up from two on current models, and The Verge says the capability is exclusive to this device. TechCrunch characterises the result as a four-speaker surround experience. Apple says the speakers calibrate themselves, sensing where they sit in the room relative to each other and tuning audio levels accordingly.

The Siri Remote also gains a small speaker, so a misplaced remote can play a ringing sound. Apple added remote-finding via Siri and Find My back in 2023, but as TechCrunch explains, that guidance appeared in an app rather than as an audible alert. The Verge adds that the remote now supports Bluetooth channel sounding, a precision-location technique comparable to ultra-wideband but without a dedicated UWB chip, so its position can be tracked in the Find My app on an iPhone.

Price, specs and timing

The hardware design is unchanged, and the box matches the discontinued top-tier configuration with 128GB of storage, an Ethernet port and Thread and Matter support, while stepping up to Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6, per The Verge. At $299 it costs $50 more than that outgoing model and, by The Verge's accounting, more than twice what the previous generation debuted at.

The launch forms part of a broader home push that includes the $299 HomeView smart display, the $149 HomePod Mini 2 and accessories developed with LG Electronics and Schneider Electric. TechCrunch, citing Bloomberg, reports that Apple had aimed to release new home hardware in 2024 but pushed it back while the AI-powered Siri slipped.

Why it matters

A four-year gap between Apple TV revisions shows how tightly Apple's home hardware now depends on its AI roadmap: the box's headline features exist because Siri AI finally shipped. Hands-free microphones bring the Apple TV to parity with voice-first competitors from Amazon and Google, and personal context that reads your messages to act on "play that show" pushes assistant personalisation further than either rival's TV platform, along with the privacy questions that implies. With Thread and Matter on board, the device also anchors Apple's largest smart-home effort in years, though at $299 it asks buyers to pay a premium for the privilege.
