Apple launches iPhone 18 Pro with variable-aperture camera, 2nm A20 Pro chip and Siri AI

Apple introduced the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max at its fall event on Wednesday, September 9. According to TechCrunch, the handsets keep the design of last year's models, so the upgrades sit mostly under the glass: a variable-aperture main camera, new 2-nanometer silicon, bigger batteries, and a redesigned Siri built around on-screen context.

A main camera that changes its own aperture

Apple calls the new 48-megapixel Fusion main camera the most advanced it has put in an iPhone, and the centerpiece is variable aperture, a first for the platform. According to Apple's press release, six laser-cut blades driven by a rotor mechanism sweep between four aperture settings, opening as wide as ƒ/1.48 when light is scarce. The Verge reports that the blades are "thinner than a human hair" and that they sit in front of a new sensor.

The intended payoff is low-light photography: in dark scenes the aperture widens to let in more light, which Apple says makes Night mode shots faster and cleaner. It also hands photographers depth-of-field control that previously required computational simulation.

Manual controls arrive alongside. TechCrunch reports new Pro controls in the Camera app covering white balance, shutter speed, aperture and a histogram, and The Verge says they work for both photos and video. Photographic Styles gain texture and grain adjustments, which TechCrunch reads as a response to the retro-style "looks" feature on Google's Pixel 11. For video, Cinematic effects can now be applied after recording, which Apple says covers footage shot at up to 60 fps, and time-lapses can be captured in 4K with Dolby Vision HDR.

The Verge also highlights a provenance push: Apple will support Google's SynthID content-authenticity protocol plus a new "Apple Reference Image" standard that cryptographically signs images at capture, producing what the company calls an unalterable "digital negative."

A20 Pro silicon, cooling and a new modem

The Verge reports that the A20 Pro uses a "brand new architecture" built on a 2nm process, the same node as Apple's M6 chip. It pairs a six-core CPU, with two "desktop-class" super cores and four efficiency cores, alongside a seven-core GPU that Sribalan Santhanam, VP of Apple's silicon engineering group, credited with a 40 percent performance increase. A second neural engine brings the total to 32 NPU cores.

To keep all that running, the phones carry a next-generation vapor chamber with roughly three times the surface area of the one in the iPhone 17 Pro. These are also the first iPhones to use Apple's C2 cellular modem, which The Verge says supports mmWave 5G and delivers markedly faster uploads than the C1X while consuming 15 percent less energy.

Battery life and charging

Video playback is rated at 36 hours for the 18 Pro and 45 hours for the 18 Pro Max, figures cited by both TechCrunch and The Verge. Apple claims the Pro Max sees the largest battery-life gain in iPhone history. Charging is faster as well: according to The Verge, 15 minutes on a wired charger brings the 18 Pro to 50 percent, while five minutes on the Pro Max adds seven hours of video playback.

Siri AI arrives with iOS 27

The new Siri AI works with contextual, on-screen intelligence and launches in English as a beta when iOS 27 rolls out this month, with French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish following in October, TechCrunch reports. The Verge notes the assistant also gains more expressive voices. iOS 27 adds an iPhone handoff feature that lets two iPhones share a single eSIM and switch back and forth between them. The Dynamic Island, now smaller, can track three Live Activities at once instead of two.

Pricing and availability

The iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199 and the Pro Max at $1,299, both $100 more than last year according to The Verge, with storage tiers running from 256GB to 2TB. Pre-orders open Saturday, September 12, and the phones go on sale September 18. They come in black, silver, glacier and a new burgundy, which TechCrunch notes replaces last year's orange.

Why it matters

Variable aperture moves a control long associated with dedicated cameras onto the iPhone, and because Apple is exposing it to developers through an API, third-party camera apps may be able to take advantage of it too. The 2nm A20 Pro, its second neural engine and the much larger vapor chamber show Apple engineering the phone around sustained on-device AI at the same moment it ships a context-aware Siri. With prices up $100 while the exterior design is unchanged, Apple is betting that camera and silicon gains alone can carry this year's Pro upgrade cycle.
