What the leaks say about the iPhone Ultra

The cover display is expected to measure 5.5 inches, expanding to 7.8 inches when unfolded; folded shut, the phone is said to look shorter and wider than a conventional iPhone.

Keeping the hardware pocketable has required compromises. The device is expected to skip the telephoto camera and instead ship a dual rear system, a main lens plus an ultrawide, matching Apple's cheaper models. MagSafe is expected to stay, but Face ID reportedly gives way to a Touch ID button on the side in order to save internal space.

Despite opening into something resembling a small tablet, the phone is expected to run iOS rather than iPadOS, with support for side-by-side multitasking across the two halves of the unfolded screen. TechCrunch reports the chip inside is the same one said to power Apple's budget MacBook Neo laptop. On the crease that has dogged other companies' foldables, Apple is believed to have engineered a display where it is less visible.

Alongside the foldable, Apple is expected to refresh the standard iPhone line. Leaks have covered the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, while the plain iPhone 18 is predicted to arrive roughly six months after the event, which TechCrunch notes would be a first, with premium models beating the standard one to market.

New HomePods are also anticipated, timed with Apple's Gemini-powered Siri update, after references to unreleased products turned up in a macOS preview build. The more surprising find: AirPods with built-in cameras. Researcher Aaron Perris discovered a promotional video showing someone wearing the earbuds and picking up a book, with a voiceover touting the ability to save what the wearer sees for later. According to Gurman, the cameras act as eyes for Siri, capturing low-resolution visual information rather than taking photos or video. TechCrunch acknowledges that comparisons to Meta's camera-equipped glasses are inevitable, while suggesting Apple's privacy-focused brand could help it fare better.

Telluride's surprise Theranos premiere

Away from Cupertino, Telluride pulled off what The Hollywood Reporter, cited by TechCrunch, calls one of its best-kept secrets in years. On Sunday night, festivalgoers filed into a 650-seat theater with phones locked away, knowing only that the mystery film ran nearly three hours and that its principal creators were in the audience. The reveal was a new documentary about Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes, co-directed by Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim and titled "You Can See Everything."

The film is said to follow Holmes and her husband, Billy Evans, through the 34 days before she reported to federal prison in May 2023 to begin an 11-year sentence for defrauding investors over her blood-testing technology. Her appeals were rejected in February of last year, and a clemency petition filed with President Trump remains listed as pending. Fielder reportedly lived in the couple's guest house during filming, an unusual degree of access, and an A-list actress becomes part of the story itself. A24 plans to release the film in October.
