Apple unveils AirPods 5 with 50% stronger noise cancellation and hands-free Siri AI

Apple's AirPods 5 add up to 50 percent stronger open-ear noise cancellation plus hands-free Siri AI and Live Translation, starting at $129 with a September 18 release.

Apple unveils AirPods 5 with 50% stronger noise cancellation and hands-free Siri AI

Apple introduced the AirPods 5 on Wednesday, September 9, upgrading its entry-level wireless earbuds with markedly stronger noise cancellation and a broader set of Apple Intelligence capabilities. According to Apple's press release, the new model removes up to 50 percent more external noise than the AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation, while TechCrunch reports that pre-orders opened on announcement day and the earbuds reach stores on Friday, September 18.

Stronger cancellation, reworked audio

Apple credits the noise-cancellation gains to a new multiport acoustic architecture and improved computational audio algorithms, and calls the result the industry's best active noise cancellation in an open-ear design. TechCrunch, reporting from the launch event, describes the improvement as 50 percent more background-noise reduction than the previous generation and says Apple now treats noise cancellation as standard across its entire AirPods lineup. The outlet also cites remarks from Apple executive John Ternus, who presented the release as a way of taking innovations from the company's most advanced products and extending them to more customers.

The acoustic redesign, which Apple says draws on work done for the AirPods Pro 3, pairs the multiport architecture with a next-generation Adaptive EQ tuned to fit a broader variety of ear shapes, aiming for richer sound with more detail and more immersive Personalized Spatial Audio. Transparency mode has been refined to render nearby voices and sounds more naturally, Adaptive Audio blends cancellation and transparency depending on the environment, and Conversation Awareness automatically lowers media volume when the wearer starts talking. TechCrunch notes the earbuds run on the H2 chip like other recent AirPods, and Apple claims improved resistance to dust, sweat and water.

Siri AI goes hands-free

The software story is at least as significant. Paired with an Apple Intelligence-capable iPhone, the AirPods 5 support Siri AI, which Apple says will roll out in beta alongside iOS 27. The redesigned assistant is described as more conversational and better at using personal context, drawing on messages, emails, photos and other apps to answer questions and carry out tasks. Apple's examples include playing a song a friend recommended in a message or navigating to a dinner reservation using a confirmation tucked away in an email. The assistant also gains more expressive, customizable voices, more accurate Dictation, and continued ability to act inside third-party apps such as messaging and audiobook services.

Two interaction features stand out. Siri Interactions let users answer yes-or-no prompts discreetly by nodding or shaking their head. Live Translation, powered by Apple Intelligence, translates conversations into the user's preferred language once it is configured in the Translate app, and can be triggered by pressing both stems, asking Siri, or using the Action button on the iPhone. Apple says Live Translation is now available across the whole AirPods lineup.

Price, battery and a discrepancy on volume control

TechCrunch reports up to five hours of listening with noise cancellation enabled on a single charge, and up to 22 hours in total when counting the charging case. Pricing starts at $129, with a $149 variant that adds a Wireless Charging Case. Here the two sources diverge: Apple's press release lists on-stem volume control and longer battery life as benefits of the $149 model, while TechCrunch presents swipe-based volume control on the stem as a general AirPods 5 feature that was previously limited to the AirPods Pro. Buyers deciding between the two versions may want to confirm which behavior applies before ordering.

Why it matters

Putting the company's strongest open-ear noise cancellation into its cheapest current earbuds compresses the gap between the standard AirPods and the Pro line, and increases pressure on competitors in the mid-range earbuds market. Just as notably, the release turns a mass-market wearable into a delivery vehicle for Apple Intelligence: Siri AI with personal context, head-gesture responses and Live Translation push Apple's assistant strategy off the phone screen and into ambient, hands-free use. The caveats are real, though. The marquee assistant features require a supported iPhone, arrive in beta with iOS 27, and at least one hardware convenience may depend on which of the two models you buy.
