Apple unveils iPhone Duo, its first foldable iPhone, alongside reimagined iOS 27
Apple has announced the iPhone Duo, its first foldable: a titanium book-style device with a 7.6-inch inner display, a 5.4-inch cover screen, the A20 Pro chip and an iOS 27 release redesigned for folding.

Apple has officially entered the foldable phone market. Announced on September 9 from Cupertino, the iPhone Duo is the company's first folding iPhone, introduced together with iOS 27, a release Apple says has been rethought for hardware that opens and closes.
Two matched displays in one device
According to Apple's press release, the iPhone Duo is the thinnest iPhone the company has ever made when opened, with a 7.6-inch inner Super Retina XDR display that is 50 percent larger than the screen on the iPhone 18 Pro Max. Closed, a 5.4-inch outer display offers roughly 90 percent of the screen area of the iPhone 18 Pro. Both panels share the same aspect ratio, which Apple says lets content scale proportionally and keeps the experience continuous as the phone opens and shuts.
The Verge, which went hands-on after the announcement, puts that ratio at 1.4:1 — squatter than early rumors that suggested two iPhone Air-sized panels side by side — which makes the inner screen wider and better suited to landscape video than most competing foldables. The publication also found the inner display's matte nano-texture finish handled overhead glare well, and described the crease as nearly impossible to feel with a finger.
Other display details from Apple include ProMotion, Always On, 3000 nits of peak outdoor brightness, an under-display FaceTime camera that stays hidden when not in use, and support for the USB-C Apple Pencil on either screen later this year. Touch ID is built into the side button, and the phone can also be unlocked with an Apple Watch.
Titanium, a 100-component hinge and a vapor chamber
The enclosure is grade 5 titanium with a mirror-polished finish, offered in two colors: star white and night sky. Apple describes a precision hinge assembled from more than 100 components, a 3D-printed hinge cover, and an integrated magnet array that secures the phone closed. Ceramic Shield protects the back, while Ceramic Shield 2 on the outer display is rated for three times better scratch resistance than the previous generation, and the whole device carries an IP68 rating against dust and water.
Inside sits the new A20 Pro chip with a dual 16-core Neural Engine, a vapor chamber for cooling, a first-for-iPhone dual-battery design and Apple's C2 modem. Apple claims up to 20 percent faster CPU performance and 50 percent more memory bandwidth than the A19 Pro, up to 31 hours of video playback on the inner display (44 hours on the outer one), and a 50 percent charge in around 20 minutes over fast wired charging.
iOS 27 adapts to the fold
The software side may matter as much as the hardware. Apple says iOS 27 keeps the familiar interface while adapting to new poses and orientations, with Apple Intelligence and Siri AI tied into a user's personal context. A new Siri Camera mode, reachable through the Camera Control button, lets Siri see what the user sees in order to answer questions and take actions.
The Verge's hands-on highlights some of the fold-aware behaviors: opening and closing triggers a gradual transition where content sharpens into place rather than one screen simply replacing the other, a laptop mode plays video on the top half while controls sit on the bottom before fading away, and tent mode offers StandBy without the phone being plugged in — something the publication flags as a possible battery drain worth testing.
Fold-specific camera features
The camera system pairs 48MP Fusion main and ultra-wide cameras with a 12MP Center Stage front camera and the under-display FaceTime camera, capturing 4K video at 120 fps. The Verge notes the dual main setup closely resembles the iPhone 18 Pro's, including 2x optical zoom, but drops the variable aperture.
Several features depend on the folding design. Duo Preview shows subjects a live preview on the outer display so they can adjust their pose, Kid Cue uses playful animations on that outer screen to draw children's eyes toward the lens, Smart Take captures the shot when it detects everyone is ready, and Duo FaceTime lets people nearby join a call through the outer display.
Availability
Pre-orders open October 16, with availability beginning October 23. Apple CEO John Ternus called the device the most transformational change to the iPhone since the original, pointing to its large pocketable display and the A20 Pro as the core of the pitch.
Why it matters
Apple is a latecomer to a category it reportedly explored for nearly a decade. As The Verge recounts, foldable iPhone rumors date back to at least 2017, Samsung shipped its first foldable in 2019, and Google, Motorola, Huawei, Xiaomi, Oppo and others followed. Apple's arrival matters less for inventing the form factor than for what it does with it: rather than stretching phone apps across a larger screen, iOS 27 is presented as a purpose-built experience for a folding device, which could raise expectations for how Android makers treat foldable software. The open questions are the ones The Verge raises — real-world hinge durability, crease behavior over time, and battery life in always-available modes like StandBy in tent position — and those will only be answered once the phone reaches buyers in late October.
