Google Analytics 4 has added a built-in way to separate traffic that arrives from recognized AI assistants. According to a report on dev.to, GA4's Default Channel Group now includes a dedicated AI Assistant channel, applying to data collected from May 13, 2026 onward. Sessions that GA4 can identify as coming from assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Deepseek, Copilot and Grok are assigned their own medium, channel grouping and campaign value, rather than being folded into broader acquisition categories.

Before the change, teams that wanted visibility into this traffic generally had to construct and maintain their own custom channel definitions built on regex rules. The native grouping removes much of that maintenance work for recognized sources, though as dev.to notes, it does not resolve every question around AI attribution.

How recognized visits are labeled

Google documents the new channel within its GA4 Default Channel Group definitions. For visits the platform recognizes as AI assistant traffic, three dimension values are applied:

  • The medium is set to ai-assistant.
  • The default channel group is set to AI Assistant.
  • The campaign value is recorded as (ai-assistant).

Because classification happens natively, this traffic shows up in standard Acquisition reports and channel dimensions without any configuration. Teams can compare AI assistant sessions against Direct, Organic Search, Referral and other sources directly, and properties that rely on the Default Channel Group now share a consistent baseline for this traffic.

What the channel does not cover

The scope is narrower than "every visit an AI tool touched." Classification depends on the referral information available when a visitor reaches the site, and dev.to reports early field observations that some AI-origin sessions may still land in Direct or Referral when no referrer is passed. Typical examples include traffic from apps, in-app browsers, or links pasted straight into an address bar. A visitor can discover a brand inside an assistant and then open the link in a context that strips the details GA4 needs to identify the source.

That limitation matters when reading the new report. The channel counts referrals GA4 successfully recognizes, not the full extent of AI-driven discovery, and treating it as complete could understate activity that loses its referrer before reaching the site.

Why it matters

AI assistants are moving from an analytical curiosity hidden in custom reports to a standard line in acquisition reporting. A dedicated default channel makes this traffic visible in routine dashboards, letting teams answer previously awkward questions: how many sessions come from recognized assistants, whether those sessions trigger key events, and how their outcomes compare with established channels.
