Google brings Personal Intelligence to Gemini in Android Auto and Google-built-in cars

Google is extending Gemini's Personal Intelligence layer to vehicles, letting the assistant draw on Gmail, Calendar, Maps and Photos data while you drive. The feature is opt-in and arrives on Android Auto first.

What happened

Google is bringing the personalized layer of its Gemini assistant into the car. According to The Verge, Gemini in Android Auto and in vehicles with Google built-in can now draw on a driver's information across Google services — including Gmail, Calendar, Maps, Photos, YouTube and Search — to answer requests with personal context.

What the assistant can do

The examples Google gives centre on tasks that would normally mean juggling several apps while driving. Ask Gemini about your flight on the way to the airport and it can pull the flight details from a confirmation email in Gmail, then use them to check the current status. Drivers can also tell the assistant to navigate to an upcoming medical appointment instead of entering the address themselves, or ask for directions to a car wash captured in a photo taken the previous week, with the assistant matching the location from an image stored in Photos.

In each case the assistant works as a bridge across apps: it retrieves a piece of personal context, then acts on it through Maps or Search.

Opt-in by design

The capability depends on Google's Personal Intelligence setting, which must be enabled before Gemini connects to your apps. According to The Verge, personalized responses are also limited to situations where your phone is connected to the car.

Google frames the setup as strictly optional. Without Personal Intelligence, the core in-car experience is unchanged — navigation, music, calls and general questions to Gemini all still work — but the answers will not be tailored to the individual driver.

Rollout timing and hardware

Per The Verge's report, Personal Intelligence is rolling out to Android Auto now, with support for cars with Google built-in to follow in the coming months. The underlying assistant has been available in vehicles for a while: Gemini arrived on Android Auto last year and reached cars with Google built-in in April.

Cars with Google built-in go beyond phone mirroring by running native Android apps on the vehicle's own infotainment system. The Verge notes that Ford, GM, Honda, Nissan, Volvo and Polestar have all shipped newer models with the platform.

Why it matters

Vehicles are becoming the next surface for ambient, personalized AI. Until now, Gemini in the car behaved much like a generic voice assistant; with Personal Intelligence it can act on your email, calendar and photo library, extending Google's broader AI personalization push beyond the phone and into an environment where hands-free access is not just convenient but arguably necessary.

The design also shows how Google is managing the privacy side of that expansion: data access is opt-in, gated behind an explicit setting, and dependent on the driver's phone being present. For carmakers competing on software experience — and for rivals building their own in-car assistants — an assistant that can reason over personal data while you drive raises the baseline for what "smart" means in a smart car.
