Google's Gemini assistant gains Personal Intelligence in cars, starting with Android Auto

Google is extending the personal-data features of its Gemini assistant to vehicles, beginning with Android Auto, so drivers can draw on Gmail, Calendar, Maps and other services while on the road.

Google's Gemini assistant gains Personal Intelligence in cars, starting with Android Auto

Google is bringing the personalized version of its Gemini AI assistant into vehicles, according to TechCrunch. The upgrade, called Personal Intelligence with Gemini, lets the in-car assistant draw on information from Gmail, Google Calendar, YouTube, Maps, Google Search history and other connected Google services in order to understand a driver's preferences, activities and past behaviour. It is available in Android Auto from the day of the announcement, with cars running Google Built-in expected to receive it in the coming months.

How it works

The feature links the assistant to a user's suite of Google apps so it can reason about their schedule, correspondence and habits rather than answering questions in isolation. TechCrunch offers one illustration: a driver navigating to an airport could be alerted that the flight on their calendar has been pushed back.

Google also positions the feature as a step toward more natural, multi-part voice interactions. A driver could ask for their flight gate and then immediately follow up by asking whether the flight is still on time, and Gemini would deliver answers to both questions in a single response, the company said.

Two routes into the car

According to TechCrunch, Google is delivering the capability through its two in-car platforms. The first is Android Auto, an app that runs on the user's phone and wirelessly projects navigation, media and messaging onto the vehicle's infotainment system. The second is Google Built-in, a set of software and services integrated directly into the vehicle itself.

The timeline reflects how Google has gradually layered capabilities into the car. Gemini first arrived in Android Auto last November, TechCrunch notes, while the Personal Intelligence capability debuted across the United States in March and is currently in beta in international markets. The vehicle rollout now brings the two together on the road.

Opt-in and privacy controls

The feature will not be switched on by default. TechCrunch reports that drivers must actively opt in before Personal Intelligence will function, and Google says users retain control over their data once it is enabled. The capability can be turned off at any time, and users can decide on an app-by-app basis which services they want to connect.

Even so, TechCrunch points out that this depth of integration between a driver's personal accounts and an in-car assistant may sit uncomfortably with some consumers, given how much context the system is drawing upon while they drive.

Why it matters

Gemini is already present in millions of cars, trucks and SUVs, and adding personal context turns the vehicle into one more surface where Google's assistant becomes genuinely useful rather than a novelty. For Google, every additional setting where Gemini can anticipate a user's needs strengthens the incentive to stay inside the company's ecosystem, since the assistant's usefulness grows directly out of Gmail, Calendar, Maps and the rest of the stack.

The rollout also matters for the automotive industry's direction of travel. Voice assistants are becoming a default expectation in new vehicles, and Google is competing with other tech companies and automakers to be the intelligence layer behind the dashboard. Making the assistant conversational and personally aware while a driver's hands stay on the wheel is the clearest statement yet of that ambition.

Finally, the privacy trade-off is worth watching. Google's opt-in design and per-app controls address some concerns, but the feature relies on knitting together data from services that many people treat as separate. How comfortable drivers prove with that arrangement — and whether regulators raise questions about it — will shape how far in-car personalization is able to go.
