Google cuts free Gemini users down to Flash Lite from October 9

Starting October 9th, free Gemini users will be limited to Flash Lite only, while the $4.99 AI Plus plan loses Gemini Pro, leaving the flagship model to the $19.99-and-up tiers.

Google cuts free Gemini users down to Flash Lite from October 9

Google is narrowing which Gemini models its users can reach without paying. According to The Verge, from October 9th anyone on a free Gemini plan will be restricted to Flash Lite, the lightest model in the lineup. The standard Flash and Pro models, which free users can currently pick from, are being moved behind paywalls.

What free users lose

At the moment, The Verge reports, people using Gemini without a subscription can choose between three models: Flash Lite, Flash, and Pro. That selection shrinks to a single option on October 9th. To keep using the standard Flash model after the cutoff, users will need a Google AI Plus subscription, priced at $4.99 per month.

Paid plans are being reshuffled too

The changes are not confined to the free tier. The Verge says the $4.99 AI Plus plan is itself being downgraded: it will soon stop including Gemini Pro. Google reportedly plans to email AI Plus subscribers to tell them when that access ends.

Once the shake-up is complete, the top-tier Gemini Pro model and a "Deep Think" advanced reasoning option will be reserved for subscribers on Google AI Pro or Google AI Ultra, which cost $19.99 and $99.99 per month respectively.

Effort levels survive, with a catch

One piece of the current experience is staying in place. According to The Verge, users will still be able to select low, medium, or high effort levels for each model, controlling how hard the assistant works on a response. The trade-off is that higher effort settings consume Gemini usage limits faster, so leaning on them could mean hitting caps sooner.

Why it matters

The change turns Gemini's free tier from a multi-model playground into a Lite-only on-ramp, and it arrives with very little warning: The Verge published its report on October 6th, three days before the restriction takes effect. Free users who relied on Flash or Pro for more demanding tasks now face a choice between accepting the lighter model, paying $4.99 a month to get Flash back, or jumping to $19.99 for the flagship.

The adjustment also weakens the middle of Google's subscription ladder. AI Plus subscribers who signed up partly for Pro access will see that benefit removed, with no price reduction mentioned, while the practical gap between the $4.99 and $19.99 tiers grows. More broadly, the restructuring puts the most capable Gemini models, along with the new Deep Think reasoning mode, firmly in premium territory. That signals how Google intends to position its frontier AI capability going forward: as a subscription product rather than something anyone can try for free.
