Google's Gemini Call for Me may expand to personal calls, APK teardown suggests
An APK teardown suggests Google is preparing to let Gemini place personal calls, such as telling a family member you are running late, alongside finer-grained app permissions.
Google appears to be preparing to widen its Gemini "Call for Me" feature beyond business calls so it can also handle everyday personal communication.
Gemini Calling screen found in app teardown
According to The Verge, Android Authority uncovered an introductory screen labeled "Gemini Calling" while digging through an Android app package. The screen includes sample prompts in which a user asks the assistant to phone their mother and pass on that they will be 15 minutes late, or to call someone named John and ask whether he is coming to dinner.
The find suggests Google is at least experimenting with pointing the feature at friends and family rather than only business-related calls.
Built for short messages, not conversations
Judging by those examples, the capability would likely stay limited to brief, text-message-style delivery. As The Verge notes, Gemini would probably not conduct an entire catch-up call with a relative, but it could relay quick information to contacts who prefer voice calls, frequently miss text messages, or still keep a landline.
That frames the feature as a convenience layer: someone who rarely reads messages could still get a short spoken update without the user having to place the call personally.
Finer-grained permissions appear to be in the works
Android Authority also reports finding signs of more detailed, per-app permission settings for Gemini actions, including what look like controls for phone call access. According to The Verge, these settings would let users choose which app capabilities Gemini may use, and could potentially offer a way to decline incoming automated calls from the assistant.
That last point touches on an awkward aspect of outbound AI calling: the person picking up the phone has not agreed to speak with a machine, and permission settings on the caller's device would not by themselves tell a recipient that Gemini is on the line.
Both outlets attach the usual caveat for teardown discoveries. Android Authority notes that Google may never publicly release this expansion or the per-app Gemini settings, so nothing here is confirmed as a shipping product.
Why it matters
If it ships, the expansion would push consumer AI agents further from answering questions toward acting on a user's behalf in the world — in this case, interpersonal phone calls. That is a sensitive domain: the recipient is a real person who may not realize an AI is speaking, and even a short message about a delay or a dinner plan carries social weight.
The apparent permission controls suggest Google recognizes that handing an assistant access to the phone app requires careful limits, and that some people may want to refuse automated calls entirely. How the company balances convenience for Gemini users against clarity for the people on the other end of the line will do much to determine whether this feels like a helpful agent or an unwelcome intrusion.
