iOS 27's iPhone Handoff will let two iPhones share one phone number

Two iPhones, one number

When iOS 27 arrives later this month, it will ship with a feature called iPhone Handoff that lets a single phone number stay in service across two iPhones. According to The Verge, Apple referenced the capability only briefly during its WWDC keynote in June and offered no detail at the time. That gap has now been partly filled: a demo clip shows the setup flow running inside Xcode 27's Device Hub.

A main device and a companion

The configuration model is straightforward. You pair two iPhones, designating one as your main device and the other as its companion. Once the pairing is done, you can move between the two handsets while keeping the same number, so the phone you happen to be carrying behaves as your phone, rather than a secondary device with a separate line.

The Verge describes the Device Hub demo as the first proper look at how users will actually enable the feature, which is the most concrete information about it since the June keynote.

Built with the foldable in mind

The timing of the launch is not accidental. The foldable iPhone Ultra is expected to debut shortly, and The Verge makes the case that Handoff exists largely for that device's audience. A large, expensive folding phone is not necessarily something you want to carry on every occasion — a workout, a night out, a trip where loss or damage is a real risk. With Handoff, an owner could leave the folding handset at home and carry a smaller, cheaper device instead, such as an older iPhone they never got around to trading in, without losing access to their number for the day.

The carrier catch

Handoff is not purely a device-to-device software trick; it requires carrier support to function. The Verge reports that references to T-Mobile US and Germany's Telekom.de were found in the code, but the picture beyond those two operators is unknown. Which carriers will offer the capability at launch, in which countries, and on what terms were not detailed in the material surfaced so far.

That dependency matters because it shapes the practical rollout. A feature that depends on operator cooperation tends to arrive unevenly, with availability varying by region even after the underlying iOS release is widely installed.

Why it matters

iPhone Handoff signals a shift in how Apple thinks about device ownership: instead of one person to one phone, a person can now treat two phones as a single unit sharing one identity and one number. That removes the familiar workarounds people use today when carrying a second device — call forwarding, juggling separate SIMs or plans, or simply going unreachable.

It also reads as groundwork for the foldable era. If Apple expects buyers to pay a premium for a large folding iPhone, giving them a graceful way to sometimes leave it behind addresses one of the inherent compromises of such a device.

The open question is distribution. Because the feature hinges on carriers opting in, its real-world usefulness at launch may depend less on iOS 27 itself than on which operators — beyond the two apparently referenced in the code — decide to support it.
