Microsoft 365 Family and Premium plans will share Copilot AI with the whole household

Microsoft will let Microsoft 365 Family and Premium subscribers share Copilot and AI usage with up to five other plan members, while pooled OneDrive storage drops from 1 TB per person to 2 TB shared.

Microsoft 365 Family and Premium plans will share Copilot AI with the whole household

Copilot benefits open to the whole household

When Microsoft folded AI-powered Office features into Microsoft 365 Personal and Family subscriptions last year, only the primary account holder could use them. According to The Verge, that restriction is now being lifted: Microsoft 365 Family and Premium subscribers will be able to share Copilot and AI usage benefits, along with access to Office apps and OneDrive storage, with up to five other people on the same plan.

The Verge says it has seen an email sent to Microsoft 365 Family and Premium subscribers outlining the changes, which will arrive over the coming months. Beyond extending AI access to everyone on a plan, the update includes new controls for managing AI access for younger family members.

A single pooled AI allowance

The way AI limits are metered is also changing. Rather than separate per-feature caps, each plan moves to one AI usage allowance that members can spend on whichever advanced AI features they use most, with the option to buy additional capacity when the pool runs out.

The Verge notes this flexibility cuts both ways. Households where one person is a heavy Copilot user and others barely touch AI may come out ahead, but the outlet also points out that some subscribers could end up paying more for AI usage depending on how they use Copilot, since a shared pool can be exhausted faster than an individual entitlement.

The storage trade-off

The most significant downside concerns OneDrive. Per the email, cloud storage shifts from 1 TB per person to 2 TB shared across the whole plan, a change that applies after each subscriber's first renewal following 2 May 2027. On a fully occupied six-person Family plan, that is a drop from as much as 6 TB in total to 2 TB.

Microsoft argues the shared model is more flexible because a member who needs more than 1 TB can draw on unused space, but The Verge reads it as an easy route to selling additional OneDrive storage. A support note cited by the outlet says existing subscribers in eligible markets may qualify for transitional bonus storage, and Microsoft says it plans to help families that use a lot of storage.

Timing and pricing

The changes come roughly a year after Microsoft 365 Premium launched at $19.99 per month, a tier that bundles a Microsoft 365 Family subscription with the benefits of Copilot Pro.

Why it matters

The inability to share AI benefits has been a glaring gap in Microsoft 365 Family since Copilot was bundled into consumer plans: households paid for a shared subscription, but the headline AI feature belonged to a single account. Fixing that brings family plans in line with how everything else in the subscription already worked, and the parental controls address a real concern as AI tools reach younger users.

The pooling model signals something larger, though. Microsoft increasingly treats AI capacity as a metered consumable, similar to a mobile data plan, rather than a flat feature. That opens the door to overage purchases and usage anxiety, while the storage change quietly reduces the total value of a Family plan for larger households. Anyone weighing a renewal should factor in both the newly shared AI access and the shrinking storage pool, especially before the May 2027 cutover arrives.
