OpenAI rumored to launch Aeon agent at DevDay as rivals pull ahead

OpenAI enters its 2026 DevDay on Tuesday in an unfamiliar spot: chasing the pack in one of AI's most competitive product categories. According to The Verge, the company that popularized the modern generative chatbot has fallen visibly behind in continuously running, consumer-facing AI agents, and is widely expected to use the event to unveil its own entry — reportedly named Aeon.

A late start for the chatbot leader

The Verge traces OpenAI's agent history back to an agentic API demo at DevDay 2024, followed by early consumer agents for computer use and research shipped in mid-2025. The category only became genuinely practical with OpenClaw's arrival late last year, the report argues, and the race has accelerated since while OpenAI's public progress on agents has slowed. Aeon is positioned as OpenAI's answer to OpenClaw, Meta's Muse, SpaceX's Grok Bot and a growing field of rivals.

The competition is already entrenched

Meta appears to be OpenAI's most direct threat. The Verge reports that Muse, released earlier this month, has topped the App Store charts and reached roughly 600,000 daily active users in the US, according to app analytics firm Apptopia, with early reviews describing the product as helpful yet unsettling. Instinct's agent has drawn attention for its simplicity, including the ability to converse over iMessage and other chat apps. Google's Gemini Spark runs around the clock and counts more than 30 external service partners, including Dropbox, Uber and Spotify.

According to accounts cited in the report, these agents are already handling real chores: filling out medical paperwork, canceling subscriptions, organizing group trips, booking DMV appointments and paying bills — finally delivering on expectations tech companies set years ago.

Security remains the category's weak point

The Verge flags security as the central problem any serious agent must solve, especially as the systems gain more autonomy. At least one known — and now patched — vulnerability let attackers seize control of accounts, and users have complained that Muse disclosed a home address without permission and read private messages. The report cautions that individual anecdotes of this kind are difficult to verify.

What little is known about Aeon

Details about Aeon are scarce. One notable fact stands out: OpenAI employs Peter Steinberger, the creator of OpenClaw, who is very likely lending his expertise, according to The Verge. The report argues a winning product would need to combine OpenClaw's usefulness, Muse's low cost and easy setup, and Instinct's conversational simplicity — while fixing the security problems that have shadowed the category since OpenClaw's rise.

Whatever OpenAI announces will likely run on GPT-6 Astra, the frontier model the company has been heavily promoting. OpenAI president Greg Brockman told a press briefing earlier this month that it is not unreasonable to feel the industry has entered the AGI era, and The Verge suggests Astra could make an agent stronger at cybersecurity tasks, software engineering, scientific research and computer use.

Distribution is OpenAI's disadvantage

OpenAI lacks the built-in reach of its rivals: Muse plugs into Meta services used by billions of people, and Gemini Spark connects to Google's portfolio of personal and enterprise products. OpenAI's workaround so far has been the ChatGPT Apps SDK introduced at last year's event, which lets services such as Zillow, Spotify and Canva surface inside the chatbot.

Aeon may not be the only announcement, either. The Verge points to rumored updates on the AI hardware devices OpenAI is building with designer Jony Ive, a possible GPT-6 refresh along the lines of Astra 6.1, and further AGI claims — all arriving under the pressure of the company's upcoming IPO, and as OpenAI moves away from what it has called side quests.

Why it matters

Agents are the clearest test of whether AI hype converts into everyday utility, and OpenAI — the company that defined this era of consumer AI — is currently not the one setting the pace. If Aeon arrives on Tuesday, it will have to out-execute products already running on hundreds of thousands of phones and wired into ecosystems OpenAI does not control. The event will show whether frontier-model strength like GPT-6 Astra can compensate for weaker distribution, and whether OpenAI can make agent autonomy safe enough to win over users who have watched rival agents leak home addresses and read private messages.
