Stability AI raises $76M Series B backed by major music labels and EA
Stability AI, the company behind Stable Diffusion, has raised $76 million in Series B funding from major music labels and EA, bringing its total raised to $232 million.

Stability AI lands $76 million
Stability AI, the startup behind the Stable Diffusion image generation model, has raised $76 million in Series B funding, according to TechCrunch. The round, announced on Tuesday, brings the company's total fundraising to $232 million since it was founded in 2019.
An unusual set of backers
The investor list is striking: Universal Music Group, Sony Music Group and Warner Music Group all participated, alongside games giant Electronic Arts and two investment firms, AMD Ventures and Pacific Alliance Ventures.
TechCrunch notes that the roster reads less like a standard venture round and more like a lineup of the companies Stability now depends on for content licensing and distribution deals — in other words, investors with a direct commercial stake in the startup's technology.
Chief executive Prem Akkaraju, who joined Stability in 2024, described the funding as "an affirmation of our vision where generative AI empowers every producer, musician, and storyteller."
Where the money goes
The company says it plans to use the new capital to keep building out its "creative production" product suite and to expand its professional services arm. Stability currently offers a range of AI models covering image, video and music generation.
A year of entertainment partnerships
The round caps a stretch in which Stability has focused on weaving generative AI into entertainment companies' creative workflows. According to TechCrunch, it signed partnerships with Universal Music and EA in October, followed by a deal with Warner Music in November. These agreements go beyond simple licensing: the partner companies get a hand in co-developing Stability's AI tools rather than just using the output.
Legal backdrop
Stability enters this new phase with a mostly favourable court record. In the United Kingdom, a copyright suit brought by Getty Images — which accused the company of using its images to train its image generation model — was ruled largely in Stability's favour. A similar Getty lawsuit in the United States is still working its way through the courts.
The company also faces a separate suit filed in 2023 by co-founder Cyrus Hodes, who claims he was tricked by fellow co-founder Emad Mostaque into selling his stake in the business.
Why it matters
The structure of this round says a great deal about where generative AI business models are heading. Rather than raising from neutral venture investors, Stability has been bankrolled by the very media and gaming companies that supply its content and distribute its tools. For rights holders, taking equity represents a very different strategy from litigating — a contrast sharpened by Getty's ongoing US case against the company, whose outcome could still shape how training data is treated under copyright law.
The funding also gives Stability fresh resources to convert its partnership pipeline into a durable business, with its creative production suite aimed squarely at professional musicians, producers and game makers rather than casual users.
