iOS 27.2 adds Apple Pencil support to iPhone Duo and dual-camera FaceTime

Apple's iOS 27.2 update brings Apple Pencil input to the iPhone Duo, dual front-and-rear camera capture in group FaceTime calls, and expanded Siri AI language support.

iOS 27.2 adds Apple Pencil support to iPhone Duo and dual-camera FaceTime

Apple has shipped iOS 27.2, and the centrepiece of the update is a new input method for its first foldable: the iPhone Duo now works with the Apple Pencil. According to The Verge, the release also brings simultaneous front-and-rear camera capture to group FaceTime calls, along with a list of smaller changes spanning Siri, Photos, Podcasts and the Apple TV app.

Apple Pencil arrives on the foldable iPhone

The stylus support fulfils a commitment Apple had already made publicly. The Verge notes that the company had previously said the Duo would gain Pencil support before the year was out, and iOS 27.2 delivers on that schedule.

The feature lands alongside iOS 27 controls that were redesigned for the Duo's unusual form factor, which pairs a 7.6-inch inner display with a 5.4-inch outer screen. Third-party support for that extra screen space remains uneven: The Verge reports that major apps such as Netflix, Prime Video and Microsoft Outlook already take advantage of it, while others still need work.

FaceTime learns to use two cameras at once

Group calls in FaceTime now support dual capture, meaning a caller can transmit the view from the selfie camera and the rear cameras at the same time, showing both their face and their surroundings in a single call. The feature arrives together with "Edge Light," a Duo-specific addition intended to light the user's face during video calls, according to The Verge.

Siri AI expands and SynthID reaches Photos

On the AI side, the update lets Siri AI take suggested actions inside Messages and broadens the assistant's language coverage to include French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish. The Verge, citing 9to5Mac, also reports that Apple is rolling out support for Google's SynthID watermark in the Photos app and Image Playground, giving the platform a standard mechanism for flagging AI-generated imagery.

The rest of the changelog is smaller but noticeable. The Apple TV app on iPhone gains user profiles, Apple Podcasts replaces its "Up Next" queue with a "New Episodes" list that has a "Continue Playing" section directly beneath it, and Apple Music receives a new logo.

Why it matters

For developers, this update opens two new capability fronts at once. Stylus-dependent apps, from drawing tools to note-taking and PDF annotation software, now have a foldable iOS device to design for, and the Duo's two-screen layout raises interface questions a slab iPhone never did: an app can put a canvas on the inner display while parking toolbars or palettes on the outer one. The Verge's report does not say whether Pencil support will extend to other iPhone models, so the Duo remains the lone stylus-capable iPhone for now.

The FaceTime change matters as a signal as much as a feature. Dual capture shows Apple building simultaneous multi-camera streaming into a system app, setting a behavioural baseline that users may start expecting from third-party camera and video apps as well. Meanwhile, the arrival of SynthID support in Photos and Image Playground gives developers working with generated media a concrete watermarking path on iOS, backed jointly by Apple and Google, that content-handling pipelines may soon need to account for.
